    Default South Fork Ogden

Hey all. I'm new to this forum but looking forward to checking things out a few times a week and even making some reports myself.

I was thinking of heading up to South Fork of the Ogden perhaps even over the weekend or next weekend. Does anyone know how the water is up there right now? Also, are the fish hitting the Salmon Flies yet?

    Thanks

Too early for salmon flies. I'd start looking for them in May. Haven't looked at the water.

Yes there are some salmon fly's out but the fish have not keyed in on them yet. The change of flows isn't helping

You'll see a loner or two early but the mass migration and hatch on the South Fork (usually) happens in May (on cold wet years late May into early June and on dry warm years first weeks in May). This is the really weird thing about the South Fork and Ogden in the canyon: The bugs will hatch on the South Fork before they hatch in the canyon. This might be due to the shadowiness of the canyon. The water needs to be around 50 degrees for the hatch. Most river systems the hatch will start at the lower, warmer elevations, and then move upstream. Not always true on the Ogden drainage.

I visit the South Fork often since I live so close.
It is nicer than the Ogden Canyon(less traffic) but both fish quite well. The lower south fork was quite murky last weekend and lots of pressure.
Fishing was good up higher by the red fence using the standard hares ear, pheasant tail and scuds.
Pick a spot and try it plenty of places to park, weekdays it is dead.
