Default South Fork of the Flathead

Had the trip in the works for many moons and it finally rolled around. After a 15 hour ride to the trail head and a 18.5 mile hike in we were on the fish. Catch rate was pretty good depending on the location but I was somewhat disappointed in the average fish size. Most cutts where 8" and the biggest we took was just under 20". The big fish were rock solid and very strong though, and they were a blast to catch. We also caught quite a few white fish in the deeper runs and i saw one bull trout. I was surprised at how many people we were sharing the river with though. Not at all what i was expecting considering it was a 3 hour ride on a dirt road to the trailhead.

This float is out of the bag. there is even a flyshop in California selling two full-week with 8 - 10 anglers each "hosted trips" to this locale.

    Fucking internet.

Yes, lots of boats, and mules with boats, and mule sheet. We saw as many as 8 boats in one day along with the other wade fishermen.

We set up camp at Little Salmon the first day and fished as high as the confluence of Big Salmon and saw a good portion of the river in that area.

Here are a few more pics

We also fished Rock Creek and the Blackfoot on the way home. Rock Creek was a fun stream, not too technical and lots of fish, the biggest was a 17" rainbow but we caught lots of Browns and a couple rainbows and cutts. We got our arses handed to us on the Blackfoot. We went in blind and it showed.

3 hour drive to the trailhead? Which trailhead did you go in on? I fished their last year and trailhead was 15-20 min on dirt but I know there are multiple ways in.

Here's a few pics of our own. It was a great time for us. Blood sweat and tears on the way in, but we finally made it. Not bad for 12 and his first real pack trip. Thanks for letting us tag along. Something we will never forget for sure.

D moult is my hero. That was a good pull for anyone let alone a first timer. Nice fish he caught as well.

Meadow Creek. Kept us on the river the whole time. I had to pretend like i was pastrana to get there in 3 hours too. If the roads weren't in good shape it would only be farther. Most of the other trail heads were 25+ miles to the river so we though if we didn't make our goal we could at least peter out along side the river rather than 10 miles from it.
