Where to eat?
Like many of you, I have found a few places that have outstanding food that become normal stopping points while going to or coming from a fishing trip.
What are your favorites? Taggart Cafe The Oaks in Ogden Canyon Red Rocks Inn & Outfitters, turnoff to Causey Res. Big Z's The Homestead in Midway - $$$$$$ great food. Any others? And I do not mean Denny's. |
For breakfast on local water trips we usually hit Moore's Restaurant early in the morning. Keeps you going until dinner. That doesn't sound right? Good breakfast that stays with you until dinner...there that sounds better! Oaks in Ogden Canyon for Ice Cream on hot summer days. Lunches are usually streamside...once it was Rudy's bottled deer meat sandwiches. Rudy had diarrhea all morning. We wondered if he had deer meat sandwiches for breakfast but we were so hungry we ate them anyway. No ill effects. Actually tasty. Diarrhea must of come from Captain Crunch?

This is going to sound crazy, but when my wife and I fish the lower provo, we love to hit Sonic. We both went to college at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and we would scrape pennies to hit sonic there...for a while, the only Sonic was in Orem/Provo, so we love to hit that place. Granny's in Heber, and Don Pedros too...And there is a great place in Livingston Montana...two really. If you fish the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks, there is the Stockman's in Livingston which has THE BEST rib eyes...they only take cash! Then there is another place, little nicer, that has a great sirloin. The homies I was with had the sirloin, me with my cholesterol had the fish. Of course, I puked outside that restaurant. I am pretty sure it was the fish though, and not the massive amounts of tequila. Mmmmm...tequila....

Breakfast :
Yesterdays Calf-A in Dell, Montana(you find my 5th wheel in the parking area overnight on this one), Smitty's in Idaho Falls, Eddy's in Boise, Angie's in Logan and the little one in Echo Jct.(can't remember the name of it). Oh yeah, Mitch's Cafe in Farson, Wyoming when I'm over that way. Lunch : Smitty's in I.F.(breakfast menu), Taggart's(when my brother buys), Brass Lantern in Soda Springs Dinner: Oasis in Manhattan, Mt(near Bozeman), the dinning room in the Irma Hotel in Cody,Wy. |
Granny's in Heber...or nearly any grease pit near the stream. That's always good stuff. Last year, we got skunked on the Weber, but we had a nice lunch at the local grease pit.
|
Callies for BFast for the Provo.
Lunch at Fossett's in Helper for the Price. Dinner at Maddox in Perry for the Logan. Dinner at That Boobie Bar by Manila for the Green, you know the one with all the Boobie Pic's pasted on the Tables? Dinner at the Red something Lodge up on highway 191 for the Green. Bfast at the Flaming Gorge Lodge sometimes, if I feel my Gut can Handle the Grease in the A.M. Bfast, Lunch or Dinner at the L.C. Ranch. Dinner at Arshel's Cafe in Beaver, for trips down South. Lunch is ALWAYS along the side of the Green River. 8^) |
I will second Taggaerts.
For the Roaring Fork or Frying Pan- The Pour House in Carbondale, CO. Great Rocky Mtn. Oysters. Or "The Daily Bread" in Glenwood Springs, be prepared to stand in line for breakfast. For the upper Henry's Fork, the "A" Bar at Last Chance. Most fishermen/guides will end up there for a burger. For the Animas in Durango, or the Gunnison if you stay in Montrose, "Starvin' Arvin's" for the green chili omlette. Plus, they brew SBC coffee wich is a plus in my book. |
SPRING CHICKEN INN , and I like Dairy Queen coming down from the Provo. I keep forgetting about Kenny WR's Sonic until we pass it. Also, because I'm cheaper than fshfanatic and Curtis, once in a while after the Berry, I have to hit the Papa Murphy's for calzone. (take it home and bake it)
|
Damn am I boring..
breakfast, coffee and granola bars driving to stream.
lunch, soggy sandwich wadded up in the back of my vest along with a warm bottle of water, and more granola bars. dinner, driving back from the river with even more granola bars and a cold beer stashed in the car (of course the beer is non-alcoholic which allows me to drive and drink). |
Whenever I go fishing up north I like to stop at Pace's Dairy Ann in Bountiful to pick up a dozen Astropop popsicles, the best popsicles I have ever found.
|
Grouser
Old man Pace was verbally abusive to a friend of mine, when he politely complained about a slow order and dried out fries. I think it's pretty dirty anyway... so I don't frequent Paces. There's a nice Cold Stone on 500 South Bountiful if you like a nice ice cream treat after fishing the Weber!
|
Uintas
There is a place right at the mouth of the canyon going into the Uintas in Kamas. It's called Dicks. Great shakes, malts, fries, and Burgers.
|
Callies
I know curtic, fshfanatic, and others stop by callies in orem before heading up the canyon. Ive eaten there and they have good food. But since i live in orem i eat at home before going to the river
Jason B |
In Kamas?
Maybe it's Dick's. They probably just came up with Murp because they didn't want to call it the Dickburger. LOL.
Sorry, that was inappropriate. Honestly, I like to bring my own food and save the money. Nothing like a homemade sandwhich. Although, there is also nothing like a burger from a small town restaraunt/bar after a day of fishing. |
If you are headed to Idaho on I-15, stop in Tremonton at Crossroads. JC's was better but it burned down this week, bummer.
|
Angie's in Logan is alright - however, last time I ate there I had the s--ts for two days, I'll never eat their sausages again.
There used to be a burger-bar behind USU that had over 50 varieties of hamburgers. Unfortunatelly it closed. Red Canyon Lodge is always great. Good food and a good selection of beer and wine. Maddox, last time we ate there it was lousy service, waited for over a hour to get in, and they do not serve any beer or wine. Echo Cafe at the mouth of Echo Canyon. WoW, good food, my cholesterol peaked after eating there. jdubya may have the idea. Personally, I like chocolate mini-donuts and coffee. Now the doctor say's I have to cut back on the sugar. |
where to eat
Lolo's steakhouse. Lolo, MT
Big Jud's, Rexburg, Idaho Bubba's Bar-B-Q, Jackson Hole, MT |
Spring Chicken Inn (Wanship)
Little bit of Country (formerly June's) in Altamont Arschels in Beaver (Minersville) Harold's Place south of Panguitch Nedra's in Kanab Mom's Cafe in Salina Stoddard Inn (Morgan Valley) Cafe Diablo (Torrey) Aquarius Motel and Cafe (Bicknell) Rabbit Valley Cantina (Bicknell) Golden Spur Cafe (Escalante) The Merc (Antimony) |
Wes
That really surprises me about Angie's. My favorite item there is their biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage. Maybe I've been at it so long it don't bother me any more.
Oh yeah, the place in Echo is the Kozy. I had breakfast there yesterday. My brother bought (I had to make up for it later at the Jade Terrace). I thought maybe someone would post as to the fishing on the Weber as I counted over 20 rigs on my way down. |
Brinks Burgers -- Torrey
Wanda's -- Loa the two best burger joints in the State! |
It's interesting to see how much fly fishermen love the food along the way. It's interesting to note that there seems to be two different types of fishermen -- those who eat and those who don't. Really, look at jdubya and myself. It's all about maximizing your time on the river. Nonetheless, there isn't anything better than a nice cheeseburger and malt after a day of fishing...or a steak, or chicken, or whatever. So, I don't know where I fall, because I want both worlds.
|
It seems all I ever eat when fishing is gas station hot dogs, regardless of time of day, if you are fishing early the dogs may have been from the night before. Those are the good ones. Try any chevron, phillips 66, or for you big spenders the Maverick makes subs.

eating
I have a buddy who is a sales rep- on the road constantaly- he has a list of every good greasy spoon in the West--- I can't eat that way- pretty much on the low carb diet- so I bring everything with me---- maybe on a long day- I might stop somewhere but 9 out of 10 times- I eat what I make.
|
shazerblaze
You have a point but let me clarify what I usually do. If I'm going up Blacksmith Fork or the Logan I usually eat at home before I leave. The Angie's thing is Sunday morning where a lot of the time we plan the day's events.
The Montana and Idaho places are usually a rest stop along the way when it is about mealtime anyway. That is assuming I don't want to fix a sandwich in my trailer. Most of the time for close trips I might take an apple and a coke for the ride back home. |
Breakfast.....store bought BEER
Lunch.....Local Brew Pub BEER Dinner....Imported BEER |
In Heber the "Train Burger" is hard to beat for a good sandwich or better yet a great bowl of soup... The fish and chips dinner or chicken dinner is also good.
For breakfast or for a good chicken fried steak in Heber try Chick's café. The summit Lodge at the top of Daniels canyon is also good but a bit pricier. If you fish at Schofield, the small convenience store in town has a kitchen and they make great sandwiches or burgers. I'll agree about Dick's in Kamas… good sandwiches. The gasoline and fly fishing supplies are expensive enough so I don't normally go for a really nice dinner after I'm finished fishing, but an inexpensive sandwich is perfect. My wife prefers that I take her along for the nice dinners out, preferably not smelling like fish… |
Jeff
I have been waiting to see if someone would post about Chick's in Heber.
I was weaned on chicken fried steaks there more years ago than I care to remember but the last few times I've visited they are not like I remembered them. My wife said the same. Maybe my taster is gone caputt but the best CFS I have tried in the last while is the 4 Seasons in Deer Lodge, Montana. Ed---- what do you like for dessert? :^) |
Ed Kent:
Now that is a well balanced and sensible diet. And packaging is conveinent also. I must admit my taste runs the "hoppy" dark ales that never seem to be available in the SL area though there are a couple of local brews that are tasty.
Since UOTF has organized a successful Rod Building Class and is about to embark on a Fly Tying class, maybe a unauthorized contingent of us ought to organize a seminar designed to delight the finer sensibilites of our palates. There is little opportunity to organize a trip to wine country in northern CA. but there are other oppotunities in WY. and ID. Just wishful thinking from when I lived in the Bay Area. Fly Fishing is enjoyable but there are other things in life. There are no rules against enjoying a good wine or single malt around a campfire either. Matter of fact, I think I read somewhere it was required. Now who was the author? Ed? Bob? Cory? Mike? Does it matter? |
ed kent
well after that eating report of yours--------- I will definetly be there at ice off on Strawberry. Nothing like Spaten pilsner for Breakfast- premium for lunch and the Optimator for Dinner-
I'LL BE BACK- ( ARNOLD IMITATION) |
When camping/fishing I like a good 1" rib-eye, medium char-rare thankyou, with dutchoven baked potatoes, salad. Afterwards a couple of burbon & 7's around the campfire. Is it spring yet?
|
That mexi place in midway is the bomb...if they are still open. Awesome salsa bar with over 20 different kinds.

Dude bored ? That thread is 8 years old :) Go fishin....... |
The Thai Chili Garden on 8th North behind the Sonic is good on the return trip from the Lower. I wouldn't recommend Thai food before you slip on your waders. The Spin Cafe in Heber is tasty for the Middle. The salmon BLT is a good post fishing treat.
|
Theres a diner on the way up to Smith Moorehouse that is pretty good., I can see it but cant remember the name. Also, speaking of remembering names, what's that diner on the Mirror Lake hwy road coming up from Kamas?
Like Taggarts alot Big Juds in Ashton, ID has a mean burger and some great greasy fries. Most of the time I just load up my knapsack from home with fiber one bars, apples, water and a diet pepsi to give me a boost. But on occasion, you have to mistreat your colon with some grease. |
