there is a lot of talk about "yong specials" and i have found a lot of articles about the fly on the internet but i have not found any pictures. so my question is, does anyone know where i can find a picture and maybe the materials that are used for these flies?

Silk thread (any color) and a black thread head. That's it. I like to tie them on a 20-26 size hook.

Here is a link to some instructions on how to tie it.

One of the flies we used that day fishing the LP was a cream Yong. I can't remember if you fished it or if I did, but that's the fly...

If you go with C&C thread, get the "summer brown" color but also try out different colors while you are at it. Small is the ticket.

I fished a white silk thread and black thread head size 24 today on the lower....NADA. I freakin got skunked (don't laugh Chuckn'duck). I'll try some other threads, but I almost always use silk.

Coats & Clark "summer brown" can be found at some WalMarts but always at Joannes sewing shop in the shopping mall at Redwood Road and I 215. I think I have a lifetime supply. My favorite nymph. I would suggest that you twist it tightly before wrapping to get a pronounced ribbed body. Twist a little pearl Krystal Flash in the black thread you use for the head and you have the Yong Flasher. At times a lot more effective than the Yong Special. Size 18 to 28 should give you a good range for this nymph. I use it on the San Juan, Green River and any Lakes that I fish. Good luck!

All I can say is 'Summer Brown' and Tan in C&C. I got mine at the craft store.

I think many of us will vouch for that...Right Folks

I have never seen one of his flies before but it looks like the same one I tie except I use dental floss.

I just talked with a student of Mr. Kim's today and he gave me some amazing info about Andy and his methods, techniques, and flies. Why does everyone insist on coats and clark thread? I heard it through the grapevine that Andy doesnt even use coat and clark, but some different kind of thread maybe it makes a difference and maybe it doesn't. Is Coat and Clark paying Andy to endorse their product or did someone just assume that :) (Sorry Andy, I am just kidding) As for me, I really don't know if it does make a difference which thread to use and that's for Andy to know and for us to take his class and find out. Andy, I know you are reading this, so whats the deal huh? I guess I will see you this spring with a few of my buddies.

Has he tried dental floss? Specifically Johnson and Johnson mint?, with a black head, I call it the GS Mint Milano.

Damnit, it better be C&C thread... I would hate to have just wasted $1.10. ;)

ok c&c thread does make a good looking body and i do have my share of it too but soon after realized that he in fact doesn't use it but something similar so I don't think there is a real big difference in thread. Just as long as you get the segmented effect of the natural it doesn't matter. Guys? Anyone want to disagree? SC usually likes to disagree with me so lets have it guys, give me the lashing that you gave MOABDDS and ANDY KIM, I can take it.

then again if c&c thread is the best thread for the body, why does he use something different? I tell you guys the more and more I read about this guy and his flies(and of course fish them) the more I believe in reincarnation because this Andy Kim gentleman is a reincarnation of a fish. I wish I could figure this one out.

I don't think it matters what thread you use. You do want the segmented effect so it has to be a "heavier" thread than say 6/0 tying thread. Maybe even the shade doesn't matter all that much. It darkens quite a bit in the water anyway. I just posted the thread that works for me.
More important, I believe that Andy's fly works better than mine because of the formed wing case on the top of the tiny fly. How the heck does he do that? I have tried everything I can think of to make it.
I am sure moabdds knows, but would he pass this on or is he sworn to secrecy?

The best trick I have with these is to start your thread in the middle of the hook and then wrap to the front of the hook and then back past the start point to the top of the hook bend then spin the bobbin to twist the thread then wrap the thread back to the hook eye. This twisted thread creates a segmented effect and the wrapping forward, back and then forward creates a great taper. Then just put on a black thread head and whip finish. The coats and clark thread absorbs thin head cement real well and when it dries it goes back to the original color so when it gets wet after being cemented, it maintains it's original color.
