I am looking to build a 4 piece 4-5 wt rod. Any suggestions on blanks? How about a Pacific Bay? I have never fished a 4 piece- Do you lose any feel or add wieght with the extra guides? Gracias amigos.

you typically use the same amount of guides on a 4 pc vs a 2 pc. the ferrules will add some weight. The cheaper blanks have a tendencey to feel clubby, the better blanks perform just as well, sometimes better, than their two-piece counterparts.

I have a 4 piece damonrod that is very light and fast action. There blanks are about 120.00 - 160.00 If you want to cast mine I am always in you neck of the woods.

My brother just built an XP 590-4. Pretty sweet rod....sometimes better....Cary, I have always heard that even in the higher end rods that the 2 pc perform a little better. What advantages to 4-5 pc rods have over the 2 pc?

its true that a four-pc rod will always be slightley heavier than a 2 pc counterpart. Its also true that all things being equal, More weight = bad.

But, casting some of these rods side by side, the 4 pc seeem to perform bettter. granted there is some subjectivity here, but sometimes its noticible. perhaps is the change in flex profile cased by the added ferrules, I dont know.

Its probably more accurate to say that on a quality rod, there is no disadvantage to purchasing a 4 pc over a 2 pc, as far as castiing performance and "fishablity" are concerned.

Have you considered the winston Ibis? It's around $200 and lifetime warranty. I've got a factory made one (Yes, mom got it for me) and I really like it.

What type of fishing are you going to be doing?

I finished building a Rainshadow 4 pc 4 wt from Pacbay ($50) and I really like it. I'm on the same boat as Cary regarding action. I have cast 2 and 4 pc rods side by side and can't tell the difference really. In fact, I'm moving to all 3 and 4 pc rods now. Can't beat the convenience of packing them up for hiking, travel etc.

I want a rod to put on a pack and hike or bike in with. I would also like to throw it in the car with little or no hassle. I drive to Denver every six weeks and I need to capitalize on the opportunity. Curtis- Did you get that four piece from LP?

Yes, I bought that blank from Greg. It's got great action. Have him show you the two or three custom ones he has there. Paul and Greg both had built some demo rods for the shop. If you want to go less expensive, you can also try the "Traditional" series of Pacbay...

how much does it cost for all of the tools and everything else that you need to build a rod, not counting the rod blanks? is it a good idea to get one of those $100 starter kits, or would it be better to just buy all of the tools seperatly and then the rod blank?

You do not really very many tools to get started. We would be happy to show you many ways to do it on the cheap. A class is very helpfull and I would recomend it to get started and help determine if you would like to do more. We have all tools required for those who take the class so you do not need to purchase anything extra if you do not want to. If you have question please call, I would be glad to talk to you about it and answer any questions. It is a lot of fun to build your own rods, then catch fish on a rod you built.

We are in American Fork. Phone 801-756-1468. Classes are $55.00 plus material, usually about $80.00 - $100.00 depending on the blank you chose. The class is 2 sessions, and includes everything you need to complete a rod.
