View Full Version : Do any of you tie your dry midge patterns with a trailing shuck?

I was wondering if the midge pattern being so small can have a trailing shuck on it. So if you do tie it with a trailing shuck what is your preferred color. I tied all my PMD trailing shuck with a dark brown can I use that or is it too dark. I also have rootbeer colored antron.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Try rootbeer, white or black Crystal-flash... It's even nicely segmented (twisted) to give the shuck a more realistic look. For bigger midges, I use ultra-chenille really small and sometimes singed.

I used to buy it at spinner fall. Works killer. I think the shuck is a Stalcup traling shuck material, but I'm not sure of the exact name. I've tried to imitate using other stuff, but with limited success.
Like you, I use antron. White, gray, and tan. I wish I could find a place to just buy the trailing shuck midge that's on that picture. I've looked, but no luck.
I usually go with grey. I ofter use marabou so it will absorb water so the fly will hang vertically.

On nearly every midge patter that floats in the film, and even some variations of griffith's gnat, I use trailing shucks.
I like Micro-Zelon (mayfly brown), midge krystal flash (rootbear or brown), Mallard Flank and wooduck.

A little gray, black, or white antron works great for trailing shucks. You don't need to use a lot. For midges, I usually don't use anything else. Maybe CDC, but antron is much easier to work with when tying very small flies. I have used a strand of crystal flash as well; works good. Typically most of my midge emerger patterns will have some sort of trailing shuck.

Hey Fred,
You can make that trailing shuck yourself with some larva lace and a pair of hemo's with the textured jaw. A little heat with a flame, or I think Mike said he dipped it in boiling water (hemos & LL), to set the grooves permanently, and you've got the shuck.
Krystal flash is easier though.

I started messing around a little last winter with tagging (burning) the end of my z-lon shucks. I was having a problem with the material splaying out. It worked pretty good & I even incorporated it into some mayfly imitations last summer. As ARW mentioned, marabou is great too. I like to mix it in with a little z-lon/darlon/antron similar to the Quigley.Don't hesitate to mix different colors to acheive desired look.I tie a small midge emerger that I rib with ultra small tungsten wire & it's just enough weight to "hang" the body. A small cdc puff wing, a few twists of grizz, a dash of Emerils classic & BAMM! or the same pattern with a small gold bead just under the surface can be wicked deadly. But then again, midges are for cup-cakes, hard to tie on, hard to see, & way over rated!

I thought that Stalcups trailing schuck was a nifty deal- Tied with it, fished with it- not sold on it.This comes back to the Tier vs the artist deal-
- looks nice, probably sold nice, he has some nifty tying methods- I don't think he fishes- stick with what everyone else has suggested- then it's presentation.
Fred- I picked up the Stalcups at SW.

Wow a thread that didn't get hijacked but was instead filled with helpful information.
Thanks again.
