View Full Version : Fly fishing at Halape
Boy am I sore, just got back from a nine mile hike with my 11 year old son and 7 other friends. We were down at Halape, a remote beach in the Volcanoes National Park here on the Big Island. We went down for four days of survival fishing. I used conventional gear in the mornings to catch dinner, then busted out the fly rod in the evening for fun. We caught omilu or blue finned trevally, roi, nenue and other reef fish. It was a feast every night. We went diving and got some bugs, lobster to eat also. On the last day we hiked out to Keahou to dive on a beautiful coral garden. We saw whales, dolphins, turtles, and tons of fish. Hiking out my son began to complain of the difficulty of the climb. I told him if he could do this he could do anything. He responded, "anything, even my homework?" I said yes anything. Adventures like this really change yor view of life. Happy New Year! Aloha, Mems.

Aloha, Mems.Man, that sounds so nice. Thanks for sharing. I too am sore. But mine is from clearing the fifteen tons of snow I received. Hawaii sounds oh so nice right now. Been there once and it is beautiful. I love the rockies though and could never leave. Would actually love to be up in Montana or somewhere else more remote and wild then this.

Howzit Mems-
Sounds like it was an awesome trip... can't beat whipping for papios, and getting in good 'guy time' at the same time!
I was trying to reach you by PM but couldn't; just wanted to trade some Hawaii fishing stories... could you shoot me an email if you get a chance, so I can contact you off the board?
mahalos,
Jim
