My wife and I recently moved. We left Genola and built a house in Eagle Mountain. We have an unfinished basement which equates in my mind to plenty of room to build the ultimate fly tying table.
I have an idea of how I want to build it but I wanted to see if any of you had any little tricks on how to organize materials. I was thinking about putting up a piece of peg board that would allow flexibility in organization of materials.
First off, welcome to Eagle Mountain. I have lived there (Ranches) for about 5 years. For me, I like having everything within reach, that means I like using drawers. You might try and come up with a mental picture of what you want, try it out and before you set anything in stone, make some modifications.
Good luck,
Rut

I just moved into a new house last month. We finished the basement for my wife’s daycare business, so I didn’t have much choice but to set up in the garage (thankfully, it is pretty big). The first thing I did was hang pegboard (painted white) along the wall not only to hang packages of hooks/materials, but to serve as a bright backdrop for tying. I bought the cheaper stuff and painted it white, but if I had the extra money, I would have gotten the plastic pegboard already colored white.
When I built my fly tying bench (really just an extension of my workbench), instead of painting it, I covered it with a white laminate I picked up from Home Depot. It wasn’t much and the surface is very easy to clean up.
Also, I needed some new storage containers. So, I found half a dozen small 6-drawer containers made by Rubbermaid at Wal-Mart for 4 bucks a piece that is perfect for threads, wires, and tools and such. I also got half a dozen 3 and 4-drawer Rubbermaid boxes for storing fur, quills, hair, etc. They look similar to this one (http://www.stacksandstacks.com/html/zoom10890.htm).

i think the best description of all on how to set up a fly tying area and bench is that found in AK Best Production Flytying. It is a grerat book and well worth buying (although I don't think I'll spring double for the second edition when I have the first) but you can probably find it in a library. I do know you can find it in Western and Fish Tech as well. Instead of spending the time here detailing what he rec's, just go look for yourself. I bet you'll be converted.

If you look at my desk (top picture 2nd from left on Drake's link), you'll see I used peg-board. However, I've taken it down cuz it was a pain. Plastic storage bins are the way to go. Much easier to access the materials and easier to put stuff back rather than have to replace the packages on the little pegs. Just my 2 cents after having used a peg board for a few years...
I've also modified the table quite a bit with little stands and such to hold things now too...
Can't have too much tying stuff...
