I've been tying up some flies for an upcoming trip and started thinking about how many I've tied and how many more I will tie. I'm curious, what is the most flies you have tied for specifically for one trip?

I usually tie about 5-6 dozen for the Green River every year; lots of baetis, midges, and streamers. I only end up using about a dozen but you never can be too prepared. :-)

The first time I went flats fishing, I tied at least 3 - 4 hundred. I started tying well before the trip, as it was soimething new. That was about 8 yrs ago, and I'm still using the same flies. I think I'll need to replenish a few favorites this year, though.

Yeah, the Green is what usually gets me into a tying frenzy. 4 to 5 dozen and a new box to boot sometimes...especially spring fishing. I think the most I did, however, was about 12 dozen once for a big Uinta trip.

You mean none of you carry your tying kit to the river, see what the fish are eatin' on and then tie them up streamside?

And you call yourselves fly fishermen? :)

We were fishing yellowstone park earlier this fall and we got into an amazing caddis hatch. I had few caddis imitations in my box, but the good patterns go chewed up quick. Not to mention it was a type of caddis that does not hatch around here on some of our local waters so I didn't have to many patters that matched the hatch, like I prefer.

As things slowed down in the afternoon we went back to the truck. Luckily I had my flyting stuff with me and we sat and tied flies on the back bumper for an hour or so to replenish the box. That evening, it all paid off. Had I not had my kit with me the evening would have been very different.

If space isn't an issue, and I'm going to be gone for a couple days I always bring a kit with some materials with me. I have a tool box that I have converted to store my flytying stuff on trips.

This way you don't have to tie so many before the trip. You can get to where your going fish the first day, and that night you can tie bugs to match the hatch in the area or replecate your best patterns. I can't tell you how many multi day trips have been saved/improved by having my tying stuff with me.

Reading these makes me feel better. So far I have tied slightly over 10 dozen. I anticipate tying another dozen tonight. I do have to say though that my boxes were pretty depleted of the flies I will need for this trip. After I counted how many flies I had tied I started to question my sanity but it sounds like I'm not the only one. I do second the notion to take your tying stuff with you. It has saved some trips for me also. Back to the vise it is..

Remember, no matter how many flies you tie for the trip, you won't have the right fly.
