Aloha, Happy turkey day to one and all. Thursday morning I went to wailoa ponds to see what was biting. I caught some small papio and a nice baracuda, when I see this shadow cruising by. I thought it was a large Awa, but no it was a huge Ulua or GT, giant Trevally. He must have been about 60lbs. I had about five shots at him, put the fly on his nose but no dice, just refusals. I chased him around for an hour, and watched him munch down a bunch of mullet. I wanted a mullet fly in the worst way. I returned this morning, and first cast I was getting chased by some small fish. When from out of no where this big Ulua appears and chases the small fish, but misses them and hits my fly. He looks at me and whoosh takes off. I put my pole around trees and run down the bank. I still have fly line on the reel, and try to turn him, but that only makes him mad and he runs across a deep pool then heads on up the estuary on the opposite shore. I can see the wake he created, and the fish fleeing in front of him. Only problem he had run me around a submerged island and my line was at a 45 degree angle to the fish. I watch the backing melting away, and consider swimming across the pool to try and unfree the line, when it suddenly goes slack. I start to reel, backing good, flyline even better, finally leader. The leader is cut through about four feet from the fly. Must have been his tail, because that is about how long he was. What a rush. I know he was thankful, but just maybe he will be there again tomorrow. Laterz, Mems.
