I am still in my rookie year in flyfishing, but i love it. I was introduce to it by my girlfriend who has only been doing it for a couple years, and not too often during that time. she has taught me all she know and i am left needing more instruction. I have 2 main quetions. 1: is there anyone out there in the ogden area who would care to take a rokkie under their wing and teach me some with tips on presentation and such? 2: i have always enjoyed bass fishing, but have never done it in utah or with a fly rod. i have some pop gear already, but i don't know when is the best time to go. also , how is pineview for bass? is there anything else close to ogden good for bass?
thanks for your help

Jim,
Pineview, Mantua, and Willard all have both large and smallmouth bass and all are obviously close to Roy. There are some smaller urban fisheries such as Steed's pond and the new one out in Clinton that have largemouth as well. Also, a couple in Ogden (whose names are eluding me right now) and Company Pond in Layton.
By pop gear, do you mean poppers and chuggers? Because I would sure hate to cast popgear with a fly rod. These work well for in the evening at Mantua, but most of the bass in Pineview and Willard feed subsurface almost exclusively. At Willard, you will get some smallmouth in wiper boils, so there is a little bit of topwater.
Now for reports (sorry Mike):
1. Pineview is starting to turn out more and larger bass - try standard bass streamers around cover adjacent and including rocky shoreline.
2. Mantua is always good w/ small buggers (for smaller fish). Use larger (3") flies to keep them off and target bass up to around 12". There are some in there that will go 5 lbs, but not a whole lot.
3.Willard is so low, that fishing is bad.

where would you suggest getting the bass streamers? as for what was meant by popgear, i want to sportsmans warehouse and spoke with a trusted associate. he gave me some sub surface poppers and told me they were there for fly rods and to strip with them.
i was also eyeing the east side of andersen cove up at pineview in the reeded areas and was thinking that that would be a good area to try. what do you think about that. also, is it any good to go after them in the evenings say from 6:30 pm on?
thanks for the help.

Just off of SR 37 (Clinton Rd) west of the Albertson's. It's at that new Clinton City park. It has lmb, bluegill, channel cats, and rainbows.
