I will be going there in the fall/winter to get some fly tying supplies, would it be worth it to pack a rod in my travel?

If so where are some places to check out?

These supplies wouldn't happen to consist of ring neck cock tailfeathers, would they?

I don't know any specifics but you gotta think "Black Hills".
Maybe a google would find something.

There is a good article in the Summer 2004 edition of Fish and Fly magazine on opportunities in the Black Hills.

Some of the better streams of the region are Rapid, North Rapid, Castle (a slow-moving river below Deerfield Lake), French, Beaver, Redwater, Box Elder, Little Spearfish, Crow, Elk, and Cox Creeks, along with the Cheyenne and Belle Fourche Rivers.

I followed my own advise and found this on a website.

I go to SD every fall also. We did awesome last year, this year should be even better. Really nowhere to fish near where the long tails live.

T4X,

Do you eat them or do you just like to kill them? I want to get some grouse this fall. Do you have any good places up in your woods that I could get some grouse. I have been craving them for 4 years now. Plus, can you teach me how to field dress them? Thanks!

Sounds like a plan. I'm not much of a hunter anymore, but I bought a cheap shotgun four or five years back with the intention of becoming a grouse hunter and things haven't worked out. I would love to tag along with an expert.

I do hunt the occassional coyote, just because I love to hang in the desert in the fall. Haven't considered eating what I kill on those hunts. Oops, getting off track. . .fishing in the evening sounds good too!
