I pulled out some of the bugs I collected while at home a few weeks ago. Nothing much of interest really except a first instar Peltoperlidae larve (roach like stone fly). It was less than 1mm long! Does anyone know if we have these in Utah ? They are much value for fishing, but are really cool to look at....

Here's a link to a photo (for those that haven't seen this one...)

I got no idea on your question Lonnie, bu on this same subject, has anybody ever heard of a good book written on stoneflies? There is several for mayflies, a few for caddis, I've never heard of a good stonefly "bible".

Steelie,

There are two I can think of both can be found by doing an amazon search...
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-5644634-3019265

The first is Nymphs of North American Stonefly Genera by Kenneth W. Stewart, and Bill P. Stark. It's currently out of print.

The second is American Stoneflies: A Photographic Guide to the Plecoptera
by Stanley W. Szczytko, Bill P. Stark, C. Riley Nelson, and Brian J. Armitage (Editor). It's about $185.00 so you better really like stoneflies if you get this one....

I took an aquatic insect class with Doc Hansen at USU in the early 90's. If I recall correctly, he said the Logan had them. Very rare though. We were graded on our collections and we tried hard to get that one but to no avail.

Steelie - Intro to Aquatic insects of North America by Merritt & Cummins. This is one of the best books for I.D.ing everything. Great book if you can't sleep. This was our main guide when I worked at the USDA Bug Lab.

GOOD LORD! Ain't much use in that, if I were to spen 185 on a book, it wouldn't get anywhere near the river..........I'll stick with mayflies, easy to classify compaired to stones or caddis.......appearantly cheaper too!

Used to be one called something like "Stoneflies for the Angler." Can't remember the author (I think Ted somebody?) but I have checked it out of the Weber Co. Library before. Also, Nymphs by Ernest Schwiebert has some good info. Again, Checked out of the library.

These are more fisherman oriented.

Stoneflies for the Angler by Eric Leiser and Robert H. Boyle. Tons of patterns nymph/wet/dry. Hardcore book on stones, chapter six talks about the secret of the white nymph and instar.

I just got an e-mail (well I got it yesterday....) from a professor at BYU. Turns out we don't have Peltoperlidae in Utah. I just want a bigger one....
