I need to do a mini-class for my son's elementary school and wanted to teach them about aquatic insects and their life cycles. Maybe even tie a fly or two fis time permits.
Does anyone have a collection of bugs I could borrow for a day or two to take over and show the kids as part of the class? I know if I have to gather them all in the next week it won't happen. I think Jason B and some others might. I can come pick them up most anytime in the SL or Utah County area. Also, is there one or two good books I could get at the library or somewhere else that have some really good adult pictures? I probably have enough with my stack of fly fishing books but if there was one really good color book it would be easier than hauling 4 or 5 over. Thanks in advance.
Anyone .... anyone .....

My kid and I can go on a bug hunt this afternoon if you would like. I am sure we could find at least 1-2 dozen different bugs for ya. Let met know if, he and I love bug hunts, too many animals to feed.

That's cool.
Do you have powerpoint projection capabilities? If so, that would be a good way to utilize the resources found on the www. Plus kids love it when the lights go low, it's like they're at the movies.
just a thought.

Great ideas all.
Chris - Wish I had some way to get these vials to you. If you get a wild hair, I'd love to have the samples. I'm hoping to get a couple from each of the major categories, mayflies, caddis, midge, stones, scuds, sows, etc. I'll be heading out at about 2:00 and I may be able to drop some vials by if you think that would work.
Grizz/Icthys - the school has a projector but won't let anyone take it out of the lab. I'm still debating taking in my laptop even though it would be harder for the kids to see things. Great idea about Jason. I'll e-mail him. He may not want to let that out since he has put a lot of work into it. Never hurts to ask though.
Thanks for the input. Maybe we could get a good presentation together and pass it around so we could all go into our kids schools and start educating them.

I have some bugs you can borrow. Swing by the store and I will set you up with a good selection of bugs. My wife was working in Baltimore this last weekend and caught some 17-year cicadas, not much different from the Green River cicadas but the kids will love them. Let me know when you need them and I will have them ready. Call me today after 3:00 261-3900

Baetis ......
I know better than to stop by a fishing shop. Money just disappears. Working there would be a losing proposition for me - at least the first year. Its hard not to spend money. Made the mistake yesterday of stopping by Fly Desk. BIG mistake!!
I'll definitely give you a call. I don't do the presentation until next Friday so you may not want me to pick them up until next week sometime. 'ppreciate the offer.

Nah ...
I was up there last week. I may be up there again Father's Day weekend and have a family reunion up near the SF the last weekend in June. Will probably be in Island Park the week before the 24th too.
We need to hook-up there so you can teach me the Madison and I can show you how to camp with a bed, shower and microwave!

Why not contact the Entomology Dept. at U ofU., I'm sure that would have some 'bugs' and maybe helpful advise on doing a presentation to young children.
With children of that age I suggest a lot of show and touch and not much tell. Maybe you could locate some bugs set in plastic.
