I'm planning on taking my wife up to Alaska in late August/early September and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for rivers that are car accessable and offer good fly fishing.
I have a few areas in mind but would like to get more ideas or firsthand information.
Thanks,
FM

Not to be a smart@$$, but, Alaska is like a REALLY BIG place. Could you narrow it down a bit, what part of the state will you be near???
(I've never been there but the Brother in law lived there for a while...)

Well the point is I'm open to all suggestions. I know my way around the Kenai area and I've heard the Parks Highway area is good. Right now I'm leaning toward Kodiak Is. but my post about that didn't yeild much information. If I can find a suitable area that is within driving range of Anchorage then I might save myself some airfare. If not I'll take a stab in the dark and see if I can catch a few fish without being eaten by a bear on Kodiak.
Thanks,
FM
I drove to alaska with my father back in 77 and the fishing by the roads was pretty poor, you had to hike in a mile or two before you found some good water. I went on the kenai, and the russian river. I liked fly fishing for char and rainbows, but I wasn't into snagging sockeye. The parks are pretty, but also hit pretty hard. I would suggest a guide and a float plane trip to get to some remote water. I stayed in Juneau a couple of summers back and it was good fishing. The regualtions on kings are pretty tight, one a day, but they are more liberal with silvers, 6 I think; if you want to bring some fish home. I liked shore fishing in the evening for dollies and hitting the streams for char and grayling and rainbows, It rains alot in juneau, they actually have fashionable rain suits. Halibut fishing was like catching a piece of plywood. They are great to eat but it is bottom fishing. I would suggest going in august when the silvers are in. aloha, Mems.

I would rent a raft one day at willow creek on the parks highway and float it. I would take the boat ride up to clear creek out of talkeetna.(mahays 40$). I would fish a day on montana creek and sheep also on the parks highway. You might head towards seward and fish some of the creeks there. I have had much success without floatplanes or guides. Hike a little and you can get away from the crowds. You should look at www.alaskaoutdoorjournal.com at salmon run counts and personal reports to get some other ideas. It stated there would be a bumper crop of silvers at homer spit. Email me at flyfishingjunkee@hotmail.com if you have more questions or want more suggestions of places to fish.
I was up there last Aug. it rained for 10 days of the 12 we were there everything was blown out except the willow it came up quite a bit but never discolered......so if your there and it rains a bunch try the willow.
