View Full Version : Terrestrial swap

I recently hosted a cicada swap, and enjoyed it enough that I am willing to do this again. As it is probably becoming apparent, I love fishing big bugs on the surface, so I want to do a terrestrial swap. Tie your favorite hopper, cricket, ant, beetle, etc. Like my last swap, I want to limit it to 5 plus myself for a total of 6. Everyone ties 12 bugs so everyone gets 2 of each bug. Send the bugs to me by June 25, and I have them back to you by early July. Please send me the bugs in a crush proof container with a self addressed stamped envelope so I can get them back to you. (apparently there was a little confusion here on my last swap).
I'll be tying a variation of a chernobyl ant. (This thing is King in the Jackson area)
Please read the post by Jay Moore on how to have a successful swap and let me know who is in!

Some sort of foam hopper (green/yellow). I picked up most of the stuff I need at the tying demo at Orvis last night. For those that missed it, it was a good demo...

We need 3 more to sign up for the swap. I know that there are plenty of people on the site who like to fish the big bugs.

I jumped on the vise tonight and whipped out a cool foam hopper. Even the wife figured out what it was. It fooled Blue (our yorkie), he tried to get it when it fell on the floor. I know he's WAY smarter that a trout. It should catch fish....

i think that is the name of the pattern i tie and use the most for the rivers in my area. i can tie those as apposed to the foam or para if any one has any prefference.

are we tying 2 of the same pattern or do you want 2 diff flies??
Danny
06-01-2004, 03:24 PM
2 of the same is what I was thinking. Here is my rationale. When I get a new fly, I like to try it, if it works well, I'll usually fish the pattern till it is hammered. It is nice to have another one tucked safely in my fly box so I can have a pattern to use for tying some up later. But, if you would rather tie up two different patterns, I don't think anyone will whine.
I have not been satisfied with the color of yellow foams I have come across. Is there a location that you can go to purchase yellow foam in a pale color bordering on tan? I was just wondering. the stuff in the shops is too bright for me. Mostly use it for a post on top...

The wrightway foam guys had some multi color foam the other night. Green/yellow green and tan/yellow/tan were two that I saw, I'm sure they have others. I liked the look of it. You might see if you can track them down.

Send me an e-mail, I'll send you David's address.

I was just wondering if you are going to post some pics of the swap?
Lonnie
06-29-2004, 09:51 PM
Jason already posted some pics of the ones I submitted. However, the ones I did for the swap don't have the dear hair "wing" under the foam. It didn't really add that much anyway, but you get the idea.....

Anybody heard anything from Hookem_cookem? I don't know if his are coming in or not? If so, I'll wait until they get here, otherwise I'll divide the flies up and I guess everyone will end up getting 4 of their own pattern and 2 of everybody elses, unless someone has a better idea?
chris

Gentleman at the gate said you will have mine Tuesday, various ants, not that good though IMO.
Danny

I have all the flys except hookem_cookem. I guess I 'll divide them up and everyone will get 4 of their own back? I'll send them back this week.

I just got an email from hookem_cookem. He has been out of town and said the flies will be in the mail today. So I will divide everything up the minute I get his flies and send everything back. You should have your flies by the middle or end of next week.

Well, I ran out of patience and packed up the flies that came. Hookem_cookem never sent his. Everyone elses will be in the first thing in the morning.
Thanks! The flies look great.

I bought some really cool flys and was part of your swap next time. I can barely tie the flys to my tippet. I know it is not as kewl as a hand tied fly, but if I promised to buy something really cool or commission a stud tyer to make some up for me, can I be down?
Lonnie
07-21-2004, 06:47 PM
Thor,
I think it's been done before, but not by design. I heard of folks that couldn't meet their swap obligations, so they bought flies to cover. I think the ratio was more than 1:1 however.
Personally, I don't think I would care too much. But for me the best part of a swap is seeing what other folks come up with.

Lonnie's right. it's all about seeing what other people have created.
I love the idea of the Harvick Hopper. I like to name my flies after stuff like that too. I've got the Ditka midge, and the Mini-Ditka midge. I tried to tie up a Jeff Gordon fly, but I didn't have the right shade of pink. That and it would stay together way too long. I think the Jeff Gordon flies are found in the $.69 bin at SW.

There are parts on North Carolina where you can't give those away. They might catch fish, but only the sissy ones.... ;-)

EDIT Oh, wait. I get it. LOL That one was a bit subliminal...

I come up with some good stuff, even if I buy it. I just want to be DOWN! I have this one fly, I call it the Earnhardt. It is really cool, then it starts on fire.
I will get some kewl ones if you invite me next time.
