Went to Clear Lake last Thurs. They just planted not to long ago and the fishing was downright easy. Buggers, SJ worms, stripping, or indicator, it didn't seem to matter. The size average was about 17" with enough 20+ to keep it interesting. Most of the fish looked healthy but some of the biggest were the old brood stock and were pretty rough looking. Bottom line if you are looking for a place to kill the winter blues this might be it. take your kid.

I fished Clear Lake several years ago...I will never go back! For the amount of money you spend going and the fact that you are catching escaped hatchery fish with no fins, it just isn't worth it. For less money, you can fish local privately owned fish ponds and do just as well...or, better yet, fish a public reservoir without spending the ten bucks just to get on the water! There lots of places to go around Utah that offer exciting action for free--Minersville Reservoir, Kolob Reservoir, Fish Lake, Otter Creek Reservoir, Strawberry Reservoir, Mantua Reservoir, Red Creek Reservoir, Yankee Meadow Reservoir, Huntington Reservoir, Pineview Reservoir, Newton Reservoir, Lake Powell, Bear Lake, Utah Lake, and, if you are desperate, the Provo River!

Wyoming 2, I agree with you completly. Utah does truly have its share of fantastic still water fishing. But I think your missing the point of the post. 95% of the lakes you listed are FROZEN !!!!
Kind of hard to flyfish right now. This place offers flyfishing fanatics like myself a place to winter stillwater fish, catching 20 or more trout a day. Yes the fish are planted by a hatchery, but they still take flies and fight hard. Tell ya what WY2, you tell me a $10 stillwater within a two hour drive from my house, in the middle of winter thats not frozen where I can have equal or better fishing than clear lake and I'll buy lunch.

I read about Clear Lake some years ago but I have not taken the time to fish it myself.
If it is a private concern do you still need to purchase a Idaho Lic.?
OK, it's the otherside of Twin Falls. Which other side? North of, south of?
Do they have a web site? A tele. #?

Try the Logan River...when I was a USU student, I loved fishing the Logan River during the winter--yeah it's not a stillwater, but it's still good! The fish were plentiful and they all had fins! Better yet, if you are traveling to the Clear Lake area, buy an Idaho license and fish the Snake River (I don't know if a day's license is more or less than 10$, but it'd definitely be worth it!

Paul,

Glad to hear you did well at Clear Lake! This is a great place to shake the winter blues. I will admit that it is not the most challenging fishery around, but it's a great place to go and catch alot of fish and practice on your tubing abilities.
The main reason that I like to go to Clear Lake is because its the only place that I can get my father to go fly fishing with me. He's getting up there in age, and this is a place where he can go and catch enough fish on a fly to make it worth his while. (He's not the most patient guy.) Yeah, they are pretty ugly fish, but most of them will take you for at least one good run and I have had plenty of them clear the surface by a foot or more on more than one occasion. And they are all decent in size. They stock it with 3lb+ bows on a regular basis. Great place to take a beginner or an old man for a great experience. The water stays fairly warm year round (40+ degrees).

Ouzel, You do not need a Idaho license, but you do need a float tube or pontoon. And take an extra $6 bucks to buy yourself a burger and fries at the club house!!! Great Burgers!!!! You can also stop by the Hatchery to view the 5'-6' sturgeon they have in a big holding/viewing tank.

Anyway, this isn't a "plug" for Clear Lake........ I just enjoy going a couple of times during winter months to spend some time on the water with the "old man". Fast action//Ugly fish for $10. The site that I usually check prior to going is: http://www.idahoangler.com

PS.... Mike and Jason, Great job on the new look!!!........ I've been a long time visitor of your site.... By the way, what ever happened to Bill Snow??? Does he post under a different name??

Ouzel,

I forgot about the location!! Its just north west of Twin Falls by a little town called Buhl, Idaho. Right on the Snake River.

There is a little spring-water lake near American Falls reservoir in southwestern Idaho that is ice-free year round. It's called springfield. It's about 30 miles southwest of blackfoot. It is trophy managed and some days it has incredible fishing. I've seen some enormous fish come out of there. You should give it a try but cover your Utah plates.
