I have just built my 4th rod. But the last three rods I built I kept breaking out in a rash and my eye swole shut with the last one. Is it the graphite? I have been told no. I have been told it is the epoxy. Am I odd or is this common and if so what epoxy should I try. I dont want to quit building rods. Please help

Years ago my Dad and I used to build radio controlled model aircraft. There were several members in the club that suffered from this malady. Some had to go to "clean room" type extremes in order to keep building and using that medium. Full jumpsuit, gloves, respirator, etc. I am not sure if this is the same epoxy, but it is likely that it might be. You may need to contact an Allergist or might even contact folks in the model building arena to see if they have found a substitute. I would definately get with you're Doctor or get a referal to an Allergist to see if that is indeed the problem.

It is most likely an epoxy allergy. Some formulation may not make you react but you should always wear latex gloves and a respirator around it.... you still may not be able to use it safely.

There are places where u can purchase full face respirators under $100. Another thing u may wanna try is some sort of ventilation either pushing or pulling the reactive vapor away from ur face while not stirring up dust. Epoxies when mixed are chemically reacting right in front of ya and the fumes it gives off while its reacting are very toxic. Vinyl epoxies if ya breath the fumes to long...... adios amigos

hmm. that sucks, i've never quite heard of something like this. I wonder if you could use Gudebrods rod varnish, it is made to be used on wraps as well. I have a bottle but haven't used it on any of my wraps yet so I can't say how good it is. But if its made for it, it probably works.
Did you use a different epoxy on your first rod?
