Hello everyone,
I just joined this site today and noticed there seems to be a few of you out there that might know a thing or two about St. Croix rods. I am asking for any feedback, good or bad, about these rods, particularily the Legend "Elite" and the "Ultra" models. I've narrowed my choices to these two rods and was wondering if it was worth it to spend the extra cash for the "Elite" model E905.4 vs. U905.4? Any timely response would be great, I will be checking out the rest of the website so feel free to get in touch with me if you see me online.

I have the 8' 3wt and 9' 5wt in the ultra series. I love them!!! I casted both series and came to the conculsion that it wasn't worth spending the extra dough on the Elites. To me, they had the same feel when casting and they both have the same warranty. I'd keep the dollars and go holla at the ladies at the nudie bars.
Peace Out

I have 2 pro graphites and they really are work horses. They dont cast as smooth as the sages but 80-90 bucks for a quality graphite rod with a lifer is cool with me. They cast a smidgen slower than the sage I have and not as smooth on the delivery but none the less a great nymph rod. Beware now the low end lines dont have the lifer warranty anymore I dont think. I still like my Sage though

I think the LEgend Ultra is a very fine rod for the money and a very good choice.
As for the Legend Elite, I've cast all those rods and don't think it even compares to an a sage XP another rod that is in that $500 price range. Have you cast the sage? I think you would be impressed. Just a thought or two.

UD is right. That's what I didn't understand when the elites came out. St. Croix was always tooting their horn about the low prices of their rods. Then they came out with a $500 model. I have a LU in a 9' 6 wt that I love. I built it for about $150. If you have the budget to spend $500, go cast Sage, Scott, Winston, Orvis, etc. If I were you, I would get the ultra, and spend the rest of your $$ elsewhere.

I've got a Legend Ultra 81/2' 5wt that I use more than any other rod I own. You cant go wrong with one. Like everyone else said save the extra money and buy a nice reel or something.

I have hucked this stick for about 5 years now and I love it to death. For the money it is a steal. If you like to chuck something faster; Check out the Temple forks. The TiCr is 'machin'.....I think I am going to get one in a 7 weight.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my initial question about the St. Croix rods. I did go cast the UL vs. the Elite, I found the elite to be a little bit better for my cast. I did also toss some of the other mid/upper models of different brands, and the Elite just felt more comfortable and fit my casting style best. The $520+ price tag on the Elite was a setback, however, I found a brand new 2004 Elite on the internet for only $350. I guess that would qualify as a good deal. Now I just have to wait a few days for it to arrive...mmmm...new fly rod....now I have to give it a good name.

I don't think you can go wrong with a $350 elite, sounds like you got a killer deal.
