I would like to purchase a drying motor either today or tomorrow. I will be building the stand this weekend. I am going to try and make it to Modern Display before they close (6:00). Slayer mentioned they sell them there.

Where do you guys buy your dryers?

If you have a 4 piece rod, do you dry all 4 pieces separate?

I don’t want to spend much more than $15 for the motor.

If I can’t get anywhere before they close, I will take Norm’s advice and order one from Micro-Mark.

Thanks-

I may not be of much help here, but I used an old rotisserie motor that my father in law bought from the DI. You may be able to find one there. If you are interested on building a bunch of rods, a dryer is definately a plus. If not, I would be willing to lend you mine for the time that you need to glue your rod. As far as the 4 piece question. I always put my rods completely together to glue them.

If you happen to have one of the lighted wire deer that has a moving body part that everyone has for their yard at Christmas, those motors are perfect. I am using one and it couldn't be any better suited for the job.

Thanks cheech, that is a good idea. I really appreciate the offer, but my brother and I are going to practice building me a rod-blanks.com 3 weight and 7 weight. We are then going to build his Sage XP. These being our first rods, it could take some time.

Thanks Dan, but I don't put many lights up for Christmas (and I hear how big of a Scrouge I am from my wife every year).

drake,

when I lived in sandy I noticed a store on state street that specialized in small electronics, motors, etc... I dont know what the name is or the address but if you see it you will know they carry small motors, big sign out front. lil ghetto store somewhere between 70th and 90th. I never went in but always meant to to look for more motors. also try the phone book.

Cabelas has a few nice ones. I got this one which was pretty inexpensive, and it works great. Perfect speed, not too fast, not too slow.

Rotissere motor bought at Target for about $25. Works perfect and is very quiet.

that is what i did as well (aftere ruining one of my kid's toys that had a slow motor.) I like to do the whole rod together, usually with two mixes per coating. works as well for a 5 piece as a 2 piece.

I bought a 4 rpm motor from ebay for around $6.00. A few weeks later I looked for the same motor again but couldn't find it. Just did a search for them and there are a few different ones listed there now for around $10.
That won't help you out today though.

I would like to find a variable speed motor. The 4 rpm is great for drying but I would like to be able to turn it a little faster when applying the flex.

Drake I'm by no means a pro rod builder (just finished up my 4th last night)
I wondered about the same thing. When I was looking for my motor I saw many speeds available all the way from 4 rpm to 70 rpm. I would guess that 70 would have glue fying all over. From my limited experience I think Norm is about right. I think much over 15 would be to fast.

But you may want to look at something like this:
