You could go this route-
Oluma Reel - $24
Cortland 333- #30
Backing - $5
That leaves approx $140 for a rod. You can get one of the new low $$ Orvis rods for under $100 (no warranty). I think the new bottom end Sages are around $150 (limited warranty). Or you could get a WW griggs outfit from SW for $40.

Juke,
You saw the mo-jo those Griggs rods have yesterday. Cheech put together a good package. Cortland, Redington & SA have good outfits all packaged up & ready to go.
You should set her up with that antique Sage? Oh, wait you're going to sell that to me, right?
2 or 3 p's rods.

some of the combo outfits offered in Calbelas. I've purchaesd three of them for new people and did have the opportunity to test them. They were balanced, and I guess that is the best you can say for any outfit.

Has anyone had any experience/developed an opinion (not always the same thing) about the Redington Redfly or the Fenwick HMX (HMG?)?

I have a 4 pc. 9' 5wt. Redfly and I like it. Of course, the only thing I have to compare it to is my 6' Griggs.
They used to have a great warranty but I don't think that it's an over the counter deal anymore.

I have a flylogic FLP rod and reel package. I think it retails for around $400. I will take $180 for it. It is a 9 ft. 5/6 weight 2 piece. It is the rod I learned on, I like it because its easy to cast and very durable. I have a warrenty card that comes with it. I hope your niece enjoys learning, its good to see more women getting involved. SF

Isn't the orvis Clearwater package around $200.00
I also think that Cortland has a relatively inexpesive package that is somewhere in that range.
One could go with a Pro graphite St Croix, 333 Line and OKUMA reel for that amount of money.
I do not know anything about the Okuma's. Are they plastic for that price?
Does the Clearwater from Orvis carry the standard Orvis warranty?
Stonedfly- sorry, I think she would prefer some new, not used(well taken care of I'm sure) equipment.
Grizz- sorry not for sale. The yellow Griggs with the laminated imitation cherrywood inlay is sexy. time to get your other poles fixed.
Temple Fork Rods are a great option to consider along with the other guys in that price range.

Also, does anyone know anything about the Powell rods that Sierra Trading Post has for $149.99?

I've fished the RedFly rod (9' 5 wt 2 piece) quite a bit and its a good rod. I fish Redington's RS2 the most though. The RedFly is fairly stiff compared to the RS2 and a Sage that I fished a couple of summers ago, it has a slower action, I wasn't able to cast as far with it as I am with my RS2.
Its a good beginners rod but the faster actions rods are alot easier to throw a loop with.

It cost 80 total and came with line, backing, and reel. The rod has performed great and would probably catch fish just as easy as a $400 Sage(never tried a Sage so I can't say for sure but...). I think it is made by White River. Hope this helps. Highcountry
