5 weight/ 9' / 4 pc.

Just a bit stiffer than the DS-2, and softer than the XP.

I have a DS2 590 & a VPS 490-2. My VPS is more of a Midflex rod and the DS-2 is more of a tipflex rod. I use my DS-2 for heavier bugs and in wind. I think you might have the backwards Jeff.

The VPS is a "Mid level" Sage and the DS2 is an "Entry Level" Sage.

In all due respect Mike, I think you are comparing a 4 weight to a 5 weight here. I have thrown both as well. The VPS and the DS-2 are both great rods. The DS-2 is not a fast action rod. The Xp is. I would put the VPS somewhere between the two. IMO I have not thrown the VPS light, so I am not referring to it. Looks like I have something to do this afternoon.

Here is an email that I received from Sage today:

The VPS is a medium-fast action, and the DS2 is a medium action. In our opinion the VPS is certainly the more versatile of the two as tends to perform better in windy situations with larger flies than something like the DS. They are both excellent rods if you are just getting into the sport, and the best way to really find out what would suit you best would be to take a chance to cast them both.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Team Sage
