Does anybody happen to have some close-up pics of their wrappers and/or dryers that you could post? Or know of a website that has a some good step by step pics of building one? It seems like some of you have mentioned that you have built your own. I am looking to build mine here pretty soon and am looking for some ideas.

Thanks-

I'm in the middle of making one right now. I got a bunch of ideas from pictures on rodbuilding.org. There is another site that has dimensions and everything but I forget where its at, search on google and you'll find it. When I get mine done I'll try and post pics, but I'm slow and the thing won't be done for awhile.

Drake-

I just finished building my rod wrapper. It was simple, cheap and easy to make. This is my first rod assembling project, so I'm no expert. I modified my wrapper to include a turning motor that I picked up on eBay for drying the epoxy, but not for wrapping the thread. So far it's been working great. You can find the plans at:

Hope this helps you out.

This works for me. You can buy the Disco Ball turner from Modern Display on 7th East, SLC.

I have dumb question. How do you fasten the "disco ball turners" to the piece of the blank you are turning. From the photo it looks like the end of the blank lines right up with the shaft on the turning motor. I guess I always assumed there would be a belt and pully system of somekind to make this work. I have no rod building experience so I hope this isn't an extremely stupid question.

Go to the harware store and grab a flat 1" pvc cap, (3) 1/4-20 bolts 1" long, some epoxie and a 1/4-20 tap and drill bit to match. Drill 3 holes pointing directly inward on the cap, tap the holes and put in the bolts, this is how the blank will be held, pinched in by the bolts drill a hole in the center of the end of the cap close to the size of the shaft and put it on. If the hole is a little big, dab on some epoxie. Cheep little chuck for holding blanks. Also Micro-Mark has low RPM motors that are perfect for this.

I simply use masking tape. I tape the tiptop and male end of butt section to the turner.

I knew I was asking a dumb question but thanks for the replies, those are some good / simple ideas.

I guess I need to build a stand/jig and buy a cheap blank and get going on a rod, then I'll have a ton more questions.

Thanks

Yea Fulano if you enjoy working with your hands and exploiting the fruits of your labors you'll enjoy rod building. It's alot easier than you would think although after 9 rods I'm still perfecting my techniques. The disco turners are about $15 a piece. I'd suggest getting a $15 blank and their cheep kit (which aint too bad) and you'll have a new rod for well under $100 once you've bought all the odds and ends.

try using that pvc cap with rubber bands so you dont have to crank any of those screws and guaranteed a centered chuck. like how this picture shows. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3666591941&category=7299

Slayer, I called Modern Display and asked them about their Disco Ball turner, and they said they didn't carry anything like that. I tried to explain to them what I was doing, but that didn't help.

I was just curious on a price check. How much are the turners you bought?

go to www.micromark.com. go to the electric motors or type part number 82090 in the search this is a good drying motor that I purchased.

yea they were clueless. I had to make 2 trips as I was not sure exactly what I was looking for the first time I went. I think they were $15. They were down the stairs going south on the east side of the building, on the west wall a year ago. The things are real basic.
