View Full Version : The swap to end all swaps !

I saw this swap concept over at Fly Anglers online and wanted to do it here.
This swap is for a group of Beginners to Intermediate tiers. The twist on this one is it's a monthly fly swap, starting in March and running thru September. Each month we will tie a new type of fly. Flies are due in the mail on the last day of the month. I have placed the order that we will be tying below. I have tried to arrange these in the order that we will want to fish with them. The category for the March Fly Swap is a Mayfly Dry/Emerger pattern. The idea of this swap is for us to become better tiers as a group.
May Fly -dry/emerger ---> March
Nymph (includes Lava and Pupa) ---> April
Wet Fly - unweighted ---> May
Terrestrial - dry or wet ---> June
Caddisfly -dry/emerger ---> July
Streamers --- August
Midge Nymph/Dry/emerger--->September
The group has 10 members. Each member ties 12 flies, and receives back 10 flies, including one of their own pattern. I consolidate the fly pattern recipes, and send a printed sheet along with the return mailing of the flies The extra flies is held, for if a returned shipment is lost in the mail. Otherwise the "extras" are then placed into a "grab bag" (well 10 grab bags...) to be distributed to each member at the end of the swap (September). Hopefully this will allow us to see how we've progressed over the summer. :-)

sounds like a lot of work for you each month Lonnie, but a cool idea if you are willing to do it.

This would be a good one for me. I'll email you the info Lonnie.
I'll tie a biot-body CDC BWO emerger for March.

I like the idea. Perhaps you could have each tier mail you all the pre-postmarked packages (or the cash equivalent) up front as incentive to see this one all the way through. Just a thought...SPotter
Lonnie.. I am a complete beginner.. (one day I will be setting up some time with jason.. but that hasn't happened yet).. but I'd like to join this monthly swap. Check your email.

Spotter is right. I need some incentive to keep you guys in the swap. Maybe you send me your envelopes up front. Of course this means I have to keep up with them until september....:-)
Who Else Wants In ???

Lonnie,
I will talk with Cephus.. but I am sure he'll be "in" as well.

What?!? No other takers ? Come on folks, this one's going to be epic !
I was thinking I would love to get some of the better tiers on this site to jump in as a montly "guest tier". The only down side is, I'm sure what you guys would tie would be way better that what we tie. Maybe we could compensate these guys in some other way. If you interested and are willing to make the sacrifice, let me know. Please let me know what month/type of fly you would like to jump in for. That would take us to 11 folks but keep us at 12 flies. Maybe I'll split up the "grab bag" flies among our guest tiers....
What do you think ?
Lonnie
BTW, I think for March I'll do a high-vis BWO parachute (I let my wife pick it out from the orvis catalog).

But perhaps you could approach the "swap" from a different angle. Each month a fly would be announced. All entries (as many as wish to participate) could send two identical flies to a "senior" member of the board who has a digital camera. That person would snap one or two photos of each and post them. Then anyone who wishes to provide constructive feedback could do so.
As incentive for snapping and posting the pics the "swapmeister" gets to keep the flies that are submitted. The other flies will be packaged and sent to the tier deemed best by the board.
Not trying to hijack the thread or subvert your good idea Lonnie...just trying to cut down on the work for the swapmeister and provide an opportunity for even more to participate/learn. What do you think?

Spotter,
I might take your idea and modify it slightly. Maybe, our "guest tiers" could provide feedback on the flies they receive. I don't know if I want to open myself (and others) to criticism in an open forum such as this. My skin isn't nearly as thick a Pavlik's. :-) Personally, I don't mind the work. My A.D.D. brain thrives on staying busy. Anything to keep me out of trouble.
Hey, your Major pitchers were pretty darn good. Do you want to sign up as our "expert" for May ??? :-) (If I don't get any "guests", I'm going to start recruiting folks....:-) )

Let's see what happens. If I need you, I'll let you know.
I teach skiing and even beginners know "good skiing" when they see it. It's the same with tying flies. We all know good tying when we see it.....

Hey I'm calling you folks out ! I can't belive no one else wants to join in !
12 flies a month for 7 months. That's 84 flies. That's it. Were you this afraid of commitment with your wives/girlfriends ? You've got 7 months to tie them ! Think, just when you need some nymphs BOOM !, your swap flies show up.
For those that didn't read the first page, each month we will tie a new type of fly. Flies are due in the mail on the last day of the month. I have placed the order that we will be tying below. I'm going to give this one a few more days (until Sunday) and if I don't get to 6 I'm going to kill it due to lack of interest. If you are or know somebody who's interested let me know. You don't have to be great to get in on this one. I'm open to any suggestions to increase interest in this swap. You guys want to try fewer months ?
Remember, each month we will tie a new type of fly. Flies are due in the mail on the last day of the month. I have placed the order that we will be tying below. The idea of this swap is for us to become better tiers as a group. If I can get to 5 guys (that's just one more guy), We'll each tie 6 of two patterns for 12 flies each.
May Fly -dry/emerger ---> March
Nymph (includes Lava and Pupa) ---> April
Wet Fly - unweighted ---> May
Terrestrial - dry or wet ---> June
Caddisfly -dry/emerger ---> July

I'm in....I am pretty new to UTOTF so you probably don't recognize the name. I don't mind tying up the flies now and sending them to whomever if y'all want to do it that way. I'll take September (I know- it's probably the easiest). I have a great 5mp digital camera if you want to see some samples of my flies. I also have a huge database of fish that I have caught over the last 4 months (when I got the cam.), so if there is a bragging board or if anyone is interested let me know.

OK. It's a go. Start working on your first 6. If we have more folks join, we'll tie a number equal to the number of folks in the swap + 2. That will give us some extras for the end of the swap. If nobody else joins, pick a second pattern to tie. Let me know what you are going to tie ASAP.

Just had a brain storm (watch out). I'm going to hold the swap open until Sunday. That will get us the folks that want to tie all 7 months. Here's the new part. After Sunday, folks that just want to sign up for a particular month can to get us up to 10-12 tiers. I think that will work nicely. I'm also going to try and recruit special guest tiers, guys with SKILLZ as Jaymorr would say to serve as an inspiration to us.
Anyone else want in ?

Start tying. If anyone wants in just for this month let us know. I'm going to cap the total at 10. I'll try to contact everyone via e-mail. If you know what your tying but I don't have you listed let me know. Would people like to meet and tie some together. With this number of folks it shouldn't take us too long, and it might be useful to some of our newer tiers....

Here is the recipe for the fly I tied. I was going to use biot bodies, but I didn't like the color of the biots I was able to get a hold of, I thought the green was too light:
CDC baetis emerger
Hook: #18 dry fly hook if you want to float it, #18 scud hook if you want to fish it as a dropper behind an easy-to-see dry fly.
Thread: 8/0 or 14/0 olive or brown
Tail (trailing shuck): olive antron
Body: olive larva lace or other microtubing
Wing: Dun-colored CDC
Not the most durable fly, the CDC takes a beating, but I guess part of the reason it doesn't last too long is it catches fish!
