Ok I purchased the TF 9ft 5wt TiCR. When I got it tonight my eyes lit up!
I casted in the gym for an hour or so and can only say one word to describe it....
WOW!
Super fast, light weight, very smooth. Black matte finish with the Silver looks sharp. Its the favorite now.

I agree, I bought a 7 1/2' 3# last fall and love it. Wish I would have put 4 weight line on it though.

Was it the "Professional" Series? I hucked one of these last night in a #5 and loved it as well. Not as fast as the TiCR, but I am gonna buy one of those too ;)

I picked up one for my son last summer as a gift. I was so impressed that I now have several in different weights and lengths. They're all great rods. Temple fork has been winning the casting contests in Colorado and New Mexico for a couple of years nows. They're a big hit with the guides in south west Colorado and north west New Mexico.

TFO should be coming out with their reels shortly as well. They will definitly be worth checking out.

How good are their rods? I am interested in a new 8wt for smaller salt water species. Do you have an opinion on them? Mahalo, Mems.

but I love my 2 5wts. I have both the TiCr and the TiCr EX. Dollar for Dollar the nicest rods I have tossed. The action on them is comparable to $500.00 rods from the competitors. The level of finish is nice, if not quites as fancy as the higher priced rods. And, they have a no questions life time warranty.

I bought the TiCr 9ft 5wt 4pc.
I don't think it is that nice.
It's butt section is extremely stiff and does not seem to flex at all during the cast. I finally was able to do some stream side comparison of a Sage XP and Loomis GLX. both 5wts. There really was no comparison. Both rods cast easier, less effort, better feel. Tried several lines on all rods just to make sure that was not the issue.
I had several of my group cast and give me there feedback as well. Ok rod, no comparison to the Sage and Loomis. I did not expect to be as good, but I was hoping it would be close.
Bottom line it is going back to Cabela's.
I would love to try the TiCr X. Those of you who have purchased the TiCr X or Professional series please let me know how it compared to other rods you tried.
Thanks for your feedback and input

The TiCR is designed to cast a lot of line or big heavy bugs, not delicate stream or dry fly fishing. Of course it's stiff, it's suppose to be. I've got the TiCR and have fished it 3 times, once on stillwater and twice the Lower P. Throwing streamers and nymphing on the L.P., the rod worked great. Maybe a little too stiff for my liking, but worked ok. On stillwater I could really huck some line from my pontoon which I really liked, but I didn't like how stiff and non-forgiving the rod was when I hooked and played a fish. In stillwater you need a more flexible rod in order to play the fish without breaking the fish off, especially from a pontoon or tub; the TiCR is not that rod. I can't wait to get up to Willard Bay to huck some big heavy zonkers from shore for the Wipers.
I also have a Pro Series 9' 5wt and love it. It's the all around rod. I really like it and have been fishing with it on most of my outings lately. I can cast heavy streamers one minute and switch over to dries and be able to deliver a delicate presentation. I think you'll be pleased with it.

...... I can't wait to get up to Willard Bay to huck some big heavy zonkers from shore for the Wipers........
So when are we going?
so why aren’t all five wts equally stiff? Is temple fork actually making a 7 wt masked as a five wt?

Jason,
Thanks for the feedback. I will have to get my hands on a Professional series to try out. I did catch a 25" brown on my TiCr on a big size 4 streamer, The stiff butt came in handy cranking him in.
Any TiCr X users want to chime in?
Thanks

I just bought the TiCR X in the 9' 8wt. for steelhead. I'm going to give it the virgin voyage this weekend, I'll post a report on it then. It is stiff, but the reason I bought it was for some backbone on big fish & big flies.

I have the TICRX in a 9' 5wt and can say it is one of the finest casting and fishing rods I have used. Very strong fast butt section but with a moderate tip section. It casts a short line very nicely. I have been fishing the midge hatches with it and it is great. But when you want to start kicking out the line, the butt section goes to work and it is one casting machine. I have both this rod and a nine foot five weight in the professional series. I usually like a moderate action rod but was surprised at this one. I have four of the pro models and this TICRX. It is much different the the TICR.

So when are we going?
Not sure. As soon as the water warms up and the wipers get more active I guess. We'll have to have a uotfly Willard Bay get together this year.

Isn't the TiCRx stiffer and faster than the TiCR?It is definately faster but not stiffer. The tip on it is much more "castable" then the TICR. They cast up close very nicely but will carry 80 feet of line without a hitch too. They are very similar to the Sage XP IMO, but with a little suppler tip section. Some of my favorite rods are the Diamondglass, Orvis Superfine, Scott G series, etc. so you can see I love a moderate rod. I was pleasently surprised at the TICRX. It is a wonderful blend of speed and delicacy. Definately not moderate, but not a broomstick.

I have both the TiCR and the TiCR-X in the 9ft 5wt. The main difference between the two is the action. The X is quicker. If your into fast action then this would be your stick. I also own a Sage XP590. Which do I prefer? I prefer the Sage over my X for all around fishing. I mainly bought my TiCR-X for distance casting and practice. I wont be fishing with it that much. The TICR will still turn over a dry very nicely. It's all in the timing. If you are not used to casting a certain action such as a very quick rod, the feel and load of the rod will throw you off a bit. If you think the X is quick, pick up a Sage TCR. The Sage is a little quicker from what I am hearing. I have not thrown the Sage TCR enough yet to make my comparison.
PS. Baiter (Dan) if you ever want to huck either of them, let me know. We could meet up and you could compare them.

Temple Fork has a booth at the ISE. I am sure they would be happy to let you take a couple rods to the casting pond to try out. That might be a good bet. You could try out the series one, professional, TICR, and TICRx back to back.

Well I received my TiCr X 5 wt 4 pc yesterday and dashed over to the local pond an gave it a workout on some sunfish.
It is very fast, once I got the timing down it was casting great. I will try a new GPX line on it today.
I would love to hear more from you guys able to test stuff at the ISE show.
The show here in AZ is weak compared to SLC and San Mateo.
JayMorr thanks for the offer, I grew up in Bountiful.
Planning on fishing Utah the week of March 28th if work cooperates.

For a Temple Fork TICRx in a 5 weight? What would I need to spend on a comparable Sage, Orvis, Loomis, etc. WOuld it be worth the price difference for an intermediate like me?
Can Cheech make me one in Purple with Orange Wraps?

THOR444They sell for $239.00 new without a tube. This one is selling on Ebay for less with a tube..... Looks like it may be a great deal there. You can always find them on Ebay as well as other good rods and reels.

I like the X over the TiCR. I sold my TiCR the other day. Hope you enjoy RC. At any rate, it is smoother, better quality, and holds line better in longer distances (70-80ft range). Just my experience and observations.

I also found a new stick at the show, I hope I got a good deal. It is a 9 Foot Sage VPS Light 4 Weight 3 Piece. It seemed like a sweet deal at $225 without the Rod Tube. I believe I have seen them around $400. I had planned on a Temple Fork, but they had no booth and I figured for the $ this would be hard to beat. Any feedback on this rod? Mostly for Provo, Weber and the Green.
Now I need a good reel and line. Hate to spend a ton on line holder. Maybe an Akuma Mid Arbor and some good SA Line? This is my first 4 weight. Does anyone put one size of line up on their 4?

Thor, you might want to check out fishfanatics classified ad that he has going on there. He says if he can get 3 people to go on this deal you can get a Galvan for whole sale. He just needs to have 3 people total to go in on the deal. He also has his email listed on the bottom of the page. You might save alittle money and buy a quality line as well for the same price. Thanks, I hope that helps. UtahFlyGuy. ps fishfanatic also says that he has three of these reels and loves them.

Hello there, I bought a 3 piece 9' VPS Sage. It was a steal at the outdoor expo, but it came with no tube. I want a nice hard tube to keep it in, I am not very handy, so forget about me making something. Any Ideas? Is there any disadvantage in a 3 piece vs. a 2 or 4 or 5?

Some FF shops have a bin of xtra tubes. Also even if you are a carpentry challenged individual, a pvc tube and the screw on cap deal is a 2 minute job.

WHen I bought my TFO's I went to Sportsmans and bought their gray PVC tubes. They are made for a two piece but I just cut them to size and then pulled the chain off the tubes top, put some lace through it and melted some holes in the side of the tube to put it through and also for some ventilation for the rod. They work great and will only set you back $8.00

I stopped into Hooked a couple weeks ago and picked up a 4pc 7'6" 3wt. I fished it this past weekend on a small meadow stream down by Durango and I have to say that it was a good $140 investment. The wind was pretty strong that day but I had my 5wt XXD line on and it did an amazing job for a 3wt in that wind, I had to do some long shots to get at some fish in a long glass-topped pool. It has a nice action on it that is just a hair stiffer than my St. Croix Imperial 3wt and with the added 6" on the TFO it really fishes well. I can't wait to get my new TFO up into the Wind Rivers next month. The best part of the whole thing was when I went to put the receipt in my checkbook later(now I don't use my checkbook that much) I found $170 in cash that I put in there last December after I sold some hay! You know, one of those "I'll put this in here so I remember where it is" kind of thing. I'm going to take it as a sign that I need to buy more equipment more often.
Thanks to steeliesonafly for the chat and tips on various waters, he showed me one of the Albright rods they had there, very nice rod. I would suggest taking a gander at one of these if you get a chance, the scrim pattern on it is incredible and Reggie also said they rated very well against the big boys.

TFO also has very good customer service.
I was a little hard on the rod the other day, breaking down an 8wt after a week of salt. Trying to give it just a little extra twist on the top section and broke one of the feet on a guide. sent it off to TFO with $25 and got a fixed rod back in turn around mail. can't ask for better service than that!

I went to Cabelas the other day and asked about the TFO 3wt and the person I talked to (maybe he is on this site?) told me that I would be much better off to go with the Sage entry level rod. I cant remember the series but it was the one below the FLi and it was about $40 more than the TFO. Any thoughts or comparisons?
I only started looking at the TFO because of this thread and am just looking for a little rod that probably will only get used 1 out of 4 trips to the river.

I've got a Pro Series 5 weight and really like it. I think you'll like the 3 weight as well. You should have asked to cast both of them side by side and find out for yourself which one feels good to you. I think Stout Trout has a Pro Series 3 weight and he really likes it. He could give you a report on his findings.
FlySmiley,
I have a 3 wt series 1, 5 wt & 9 wt ticrx and a 5 wt pro series and they have always fished great for me. Quite a few people that I fish with also use the series 1 3 wt and they love it as well...Another friend wanted to the 4 pc 3 wt so she went with the professional series and it casts a little different than the series 1 but not enough to make much of a difference....I save the cash for the rods that I use more frequently...

Does anyone have any comparisons for the TFO and the Launch or FLi series Sage rods?
Trav... Do you think that the 3wt pro is worth the extra $ over the series 1???
I think the most deciding factor is weither or not you want a 2 pc or a 4 pc rod. The action is only slightly different and the reel seat is nicer. I didn't mind the 2 pc and at $90 I think it is a steal and casts just fine. I've been around TFO rods for almost 5 years now and think they are one of the best deals on the market especially since Lefty singed on as the spokesman/rod designer.
I've not cast the sage FLI series...Sorry....
