I have been building quite a few rods lately and people are asking me to sign the blanks for them. I have signed a few of them with a Gold Paint pen that is extra fine and seems to turn out nice, but I know over time its going to come off. Are you guys ordering labels or using pens? If using pens which do you prefer?

I've ordered some custom labels from:
http://www.decalconnection.com/Rod%20Builders%20Page.htm
And I am very happy with them. The guy who runs the business is really helpful and does a great job.

Yeah I have seen that site as well. Just have not made the order yet. Thanks. Good to hear the feedback about that company.

IMO lables, although consistent, lack the homegrown appeal of a hand-inked signature.
A rapidograph technical pen will give you a nice fine line and good results. White ink looks sharp. Keep 'em clean, though, they're expensive.

Decal Connection will also do a custom signature font with your signature for reasonable. The water slide is the way to go, looks great and is not to hard to attatch.

Cary thanks a ton. I have a full set of rapidigraphs. I use them a lot with the pen and ink stuff I do. What brand of ink do you recommend and do I need to treat the sig with anything after I am done?

If you got a set of these pens, you're in good shape. Not sure what brand of ink, I just buy it where I buy the pens, and as long as its for use with technical pens shouldnt be a problem.
I lay down a coat or two of finish, then buff the surface with some 400 wet or dry paper. The buffed surface grabs the ink nicely. When dry, put another coat or two of finish over the inscription, and your done. If you use the standard two-part epoxy finishes, and DON'T THIN, the ink will not smudge.
The cool think about laying down a few layers of finish before you write on the blank is that if, in the future (say you build a rod for dude-buddy, but he decides to give it to dude-lady) you can sand off dudebuddy's name and not mar the blank.
PS - happy b-day. Oh to be 29 agian....

I got into burning the cork a few years, ok more than a few , and have kept on doing it. I put the length, weight, yada yada.
Chris - do you use one of those funky laser things? I bet that looks pretty sharp, got a pic on your website?

I have a plug in hand held hot iron with multiple tips that gets to the perfect temp. as to not over do it.
There is a picture on the site although it does not expand. YOu can see how it looks a bit but it really looks much nicer once has fish and sweat and shit all over it.
I used to engrave the but caps as well but that was so time consuming and one oops and done time to do over that I thought of something else.

This is good. It's exactly what you need to do bug labels...

I found a kit locally that comes with software for 7 bucks. Finally! Screw gel pens and dry transfer. It's a decal kit from Testors (the model company). Stick the decal sheets in your printer and have a nice water transfer decal! Shoot me an e-mail......
