I have been finishing rods with lite Flex-Coat, and although I am well pleased, Curtis Fry was telling me about some other finish that's better. I think he was saying that Cary uses it. Hmmmm. What is it, and what advantages does it have over Flex-Coat? And no more ranting about C&F boxes;)

He is probably using u40 or gudebrod, they are all fairly comparable when finished, it is th ehandling and use that makes the difference. I still prefer regular flex coat over the lite and the other brands but I think that is due to what I grew up on.
Good wrapping sir.

Thank you Master Yoda #2. I may get some to try it out.

I much prefer U40. Doesn't seem to dry as fast. Gives me enough time to apply several small coats vs. one or two big coats. It also seems to be a little more forgiving when mixing the two parts. Both parts have to be almost identical with flexcoat or it doesn't dry completely. I haven't had this issue since I switched to U40. I think they even have a finish that doesn't require mixing, but I haven't tried it yet. Again, its personal preference, but I like U40 much better.

CHeech you make me blush with humbleness.
Chris you are right. I use U-40 Duragloss. This stuff has gone through a few reformulations the last few years, but its pretty good. No voo-doo needed, levels nicely, thin, no bubbles, long pot life. no heat needed, ect ect ect. All these 2-part epoxy finishes, glass coat, U-40, Classic, FC, Gudebrod, have their pros & cons.
Skywalker Cheech, if you're happy with FC and have good results don’t change, if you want to mess around with something different, give Duragloss a shot. The finish on the rod you built me was better than any factory job, so I think you’re there.
As Chris eludes too, the best finish is the one you are used to and understand the fickle personality and idiosyncrasies it has. Not unlike a marriage.
Regarding FC, I also preferred the reg to the lite, got more consistent results.
BTW, I still owe you five bucks….

cool I'll give the u-40 a shot just for fun. I have a 7 wt that is dying to be turned. Cary don't sweat the $5 bucks. I plan on hitting you up in 30 years and adding up interest;) May the force be with you.

Glass Coat all the way, its kind of a pain in the ass to get a hold of but If I ever move back to utah I wouldn't mind hookin ya up. (hopefully soon) I used LS Supreme for a while and its not too shabby. I am liking the pot life on GC and the finish is like the name.

Do you guys purchase the U-40 and Flex Coat from your local flyshop or online? Or can you buy it at Home Depot?
Try Anglers workshop. I'm not aware of any local shops carrying the stuff

James at Hooked in Kaysville was ordering more U40 a couple weeks ago. Sorry, but I haven't stopped by to see if it was in.

Greg has the U-40 Duragloss at Lone Peak in AF. I've used the FC and I just didn't like it once Cary told me about and I tried the U-40 (for many of the reaons he mentions here).
In the end, the FC tastes better but U-40 has a better smell.

good stuff, very easy to work with and if you get carried away when mixing by introducing bubbles, they disapate quickly.
