I decided to post a few pics of the fly tying desk photos that some of you have submitted to me. I will eventually put together a short article and summary for each desk.

I'm impressed. It's nice to see that a few on the board are able to carve out a permanent space for the craft. Gets my creative juices flowing for making a tying place of my own.

You guys are way too tidy for me!
I'm usually amongst 4" of cluttered materials all around me that consists of whatever I've been tying in the last couple of Months, stuff hanging all around me, critter skins of various sorts hanging around keeping me company. Ask Don he's been my tying "dungeon" as Jason put it..
But you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way! It the only room in the house that my wife doesn't rule, and it's just the way I like it!
"Now, where are those medium Taranchula Rubber legs? They're in here somewhere? I'm pretty sure there in that stack right there!"

Dang!!! What are the chances? I just finished cleaning up my fly desk and log in to find this post. Wish I would have found it before I started, I'd of had the Mrs. take a look at what others look like. Now I am depressed, how can one tie in a sterile environment? Oh yeh, as soon as a tie one it will look like it did yesterday. Life is good!

Thanks for posting these Jason. Good looking stuff here. Maybe some other tyers will add an image their tying areas.
Someone sure likes snowboarding.

I wish I had a way to take a pic. Mine is similar to the computer set up except the scenario would be a tying bench, empty wine and beer bottles, water based tobacco smoking devise, me waking up at 6 in the morning still at the bench wondering wtf that is that I tied last night. "no respectable fish would eat that piece of sh@t" :( .
who's is the rod building and snowboarding bench?

Now that is funny! I believe that is Slayer's setup with the Snowboard and rod turner. Could be wrong though.

JayMorr,
Where did you get that organizer? The one with the RoundRocks sticker on the side.

I picked that up at the Angler's Inn closeout days. It was a pretty sweet pick up and I love it (I HAD to have it). I think it was originally ordered through Round Rocks. You can try them out or I am sure you could build one easy out of Plexi.

Thanks, I will try Roundrocks and hit the search engines on the web and see if I can't find one. Are the tray compartments resizable, or are they permanent size?

Mine are permanent. I did some searches on google for them a few weeks ago and had a hard time finding any premade on the web.
Let me know if you find something.

I got some info. I called RoundRocks and those cases were custom made for them. They were filled with midges and sold to Angler's Inn. He said he pays $300 bucks for each case. Whew!
He suggested to check craft stores and look for the sewing/button organizers.
Thanks Pagosa and JayMorr.
P.S. Can I have first call on the box if you ever part with it. I think it's too big for your desk!
I will keep looking

it looks similar to one I've looked at called "The Bug Box" but the handle is different. Is it homegrown? How heavy is it? Anything else the owner can say about it?

The tying box was homemade by myself. It measures 16 x 19 x 9 inches. I designed it similar to the Bug Box, but with improvements. I only saw a picture of the Bug Box in the Fly Fishermen magazine so I didn't have much to go by. I needed a box that I could have my hackles in their full ziplocks. I tied for a fly shop and tying at shows, I had to represent the shop. While I was tying, people ask what material for this or that, and they could purchase the exact material. I also wanted something to hold a lot of stuff. I never knew what or where I was tying next whether it was at a fly show, group tying session or a fly tying class. There were a few times when I had to supply the entire class with materials from my box.
I also wanted something with somewhat of an organized factor. Something this fly tyer never got a grasp on. So far it fits my bill. It is heavy, but people expect me to show up with this.
Finger joints throughout, I used 1/2 inch popular with the panels just Luan. I want a handle that could take some punishment, thus the long handle from edge to edge. The handle utilizes a dovetail joint, in case I needed to take off one piece and fit another handle in, so it is not glue. I used plexiglass for the top so I could keep deerhair from being crushed. It is not a piece of furniture, but it is my best woodworking project to date, though now it is starting to look old....oops it is getting it's patina. (scratches too).
If any more information is needed, I can take more images and provide any specifics.
Thank for your interest.

The only reason I would even guess that it wasn't comercially made is the handle...I like your version better. Appears to have served you well. Thanks for the reply.

Oh I almost forgot to add another quote by our friend the late Bob Ross. After tying a bunch of flies one night and messing up a few and still catching fish on them it occured to me "If you've tyed flies (painted) before you know that we don't make mistakes -- we have happy accidents."

We'll it's not really a desk, but it's where I do most of my tying. Yes, on the coffee table, on the floor, in front of the tube. It can be really hard to tie with my little yorkie (blue) "helping" me :-). My wife generally makes me pack my tying stuff up when I'm done. It all goes in my wooden case. I need a fixed space, but haven't been able to swing it yet.

I didn't know a Yorkie could go on point. But I guess a dry fly is about right for the retreive. I just hope Blue has a soft mouth. 80

Nice Lonnie. I want to eventually setup a little tying station in the family room too so I can tie in front of the tube and not feel like I'm wasting time watching Celebrity Mole or The Bachelorlette. :-) Also, your dog looks like it would make for a nice meal for my dogs.
I got the Rubbermaid bins at Target i think, and then the nuts & bolt bins from Lowes. I will have to reorganize soon because my smaller bins are full. I will probably get another nuts/bolts bin and another rubbermaid setup to help with the overflow.

I too tie in the living room. It's out of necessity though. 2 bedroom apt with a wife and tow kids.... RAW was saying something about sardines with tomato sauce??
Lonnie- Jason's dogs tried to make a meal out of me once. I hear Maefly is an expert dog trainer if you are interested;)

Jason,
I dunno, blue is pretty fiesty (well as fiesty as 9 lbs can be) Unfortunately, he dosen't play well with others. He has taken on 70 lb Labs and got a little leg action out of it too!.....;-)

Ferris Great Pyrenese 160+ lbs mountain machine
Aspen 3/4 Malamute 1/4 Husky 120-125 lbs crazy and unpredictable packs like a mother
Saki Rottweiler 115-120 lbs overweight, lazy, princess, sissy bit**. Soon to be spouse's dog, grew up in Orange County, she is outside right now eating and whining at the same time.
Lonnie, Ferris could use a good leg humpbump with an after taste come on up. I'll swap you for the Rotty.

Nightfish,
The shop is my other hobby. I enjoy it just about as mush as fishing. I have made some changes to a new desk that I finished a few months ago. I need to get a picture of it to Jason to post.
