I remember many years ago I went to the FFF lodge up in West Yellowstone and saw some incredible, ultra realistic stonefly imitiations. I happened across this article and thought you all might find it of interest. While of little value, in terms of catching fish, these flies start at $4000. Anyone out there tried with success at closely reproducing bugs like these?

Who in Haites has enough money to spend 4 grand on a fly? Who is dumb enough to spend that much money on a fly might be a better question. What, you can't catch fish on 89 cent stoneflies bought from Sportsmans? 4 grand would be enough for me to take my trips to Alaska and Chile. Maybe I can get one of these high rollers to sponsor me!

I think that those super realistic flies are totally killer. Would I ever buy one? Not at $4000. Do I respect the talent, patience and slight insanity it would take to tie one? Absolutely. If you have the talent to create patterns like that, you're definitely a true artisan. 150 hours?!? All I can say is you must get a lot of satisfaction out of creating something lifelike from a bunch of random stuff that isn't.

I think I'll stick to easier and effective patterns like the Astro Midge:
