I am tying what in my feeble mind is a mating midge-
I can not for the life of me find a picture anywhere of this- anyone know where to look. What I am tying I am not going to change- it is working well- just want to see what it was suppose to look like.

Crosby- I fish a few mating midge patterns. One is just like a renegade minus the peacock herl, and it has grizzly on both ends (tied in 14 to 18). another is a double parachute MM, like the one i just described. I also have been messing around with a double bunny midge. I think there quite a few variations. Jason calls them sex midges..... what a porno minded freak...

I may be spilling the beans here, I think Lonnie tie's his Asto midge in a mating midge style. I think he called it a Humping Astro Midge or something.

One of my favorite; the Double Midge, Mating Midge, Sex Midge, Humpy Midge, etc. It's basically a Renegade but tied with Grizzly hackle on both ends. The body can be thread, dubbing, peacock, etc. You can also add a hi-vis post in the middle for low light conditions. I've even tied them with a foam body:

Here's another one that might spark some inspiration.

Cheech- yea that is basically it- I have been messing with the double bunny midge also, but it is easier and quicker with the CDC. 4 CDC feather together- curved up. tie in behing hook eye- pull from back until feathers are at the right wing height- wrap back over the other feathers to bend of hook, wrap behind and around to stand up- clip off- wrap to front and in front of the CDC- so they stand up like a compardun wing at either end- done. Just wanted to see a picture is all I guess.

Yah, that parachute mating midge is sweet. It actually looks like a hackle pullover which gives me some ideas for some cool double hackle pullover midge patterns. CDHPM baby! I'll tie some up tonight and see what I can come up with. Ooooh, I could tie them on a light scud hook and use the curved shank to really create a cool effect. Kinda like those double helicopters that have the angled propellers?! Actually, it looks like that pattern is tied on a 200R curved hook. Maybe I'll try that out as well.

I think that's illegal in this state. I pleed the 5th....

Here's a double midge and my first attempt at a double hackle pullover. The DH turned out a little crappy but I'll tie up a few more that are better.

What I've done is to tie up a griffith's gnat type fly (just no peacock, so I guess it's not a Griffith's technically). Then I trim the hackle from the bottom and the middle section. The end result is very similar to the double hackle pullover. Jason, are you using like 7X tippet for that pullover?

Actually i think it was 6x tippet. The problem I had with this fly, is that i was using a light hook and everytime i put any pressure on it to secure the pullover, the hook would tweak and bend. i think they were ABI hooks, 200R style. I don't like them. They're better for simpler patterns where you don't have to put a lot of thread tension on the hook. I'm going to try the double pullover tonight on a heavier wired hook.

What size hook?

Do you like Mustad dry fly hooks?

Here's a better one that I tied tonight. I tied this on a size 16 dry fly hook, which happened to be a Mustad. I bent it by hand slightly to create a scud hook shape. It worked out good. Gotta have a gallows tool for sure to tie these. Sorry about the nasty background color. :-)

Nice fly. I'll have to try these out too. I have been tying mine without a gallows and it works out pretty nice. I use 6x tippet and make a loop. I stick my left index finger into the loop to keep it tight, and just work with the rest of my fingers. Seems to do the trick pretty good.

Jason,

Could you tie one of these up tonight? I would love to see that technique...

Yah, I'll be tying a few up tonight along with a few Astro Midges. How about a Astro hackle pullover? Hmmm. Lonnie, is that ok if I modified the infamous Astro?

For the pullovers, the gallow tool has helped a lot. I use to do it by hand like Cheech. I went to fishtech and got a $12 Gallows tool and it made it so much easier. I'm sure Lance could hook anyone up with a descent gallows tool at Fishtech.

Jason,
We'll talk about it. I've got to re-read the manual.....;-)

Have any of you tried with different colored hackle besides grizzly?

Yah, I like to use a dark dun for my BWO, a cream for my PMD's, died olive grizzly for my drakes, brown for a few caddis patterns, black for ants. What about you Fred?

I see. I guess you think I'm a total idiot. LMAO.

Well, I was actually talking about the mating midge. I use grizzly. Have tried dark dun, but it's really hard to see.

So, I've been sticking with grizzly.

Come on Fred, just playing with ya. I've used the dun colored but classic grizzly is just too midgey not to use it.
