Well, I managed to tie my first two woolly buggars tonight!
They look sorta like they've had about ten fish caught on them already but I don't care. I had to stop after two since it's hard to keep a two-year old out of your materials!
I definately need some more practice, how's the Highcountry tying club coming along?

Buggers are fun to tie. I'm sure those won't be your last. After you get the kids to bed, sit down and tie about a dozen of one particular pattern. After each fly it will get easier and you'll get the hang of it. Once you become an expert on one pattern move on to another.
What's nice with tying buggers and leech patterns is that you can basically create your own patterns using any color combo you'd like. Plus, there are tons of different materials you can use. I'm sure there are atleast 100,000 color combinations and styles you could come up with if you wanted to. Stick to the simple well known proven patterns and you'll be fine.
What grade and brand of hackle are you using?

You are upon the wide road of addiction!
All of your thoughts and time will be consumed in the pursuit of learning new fly patterns.
Tying materials will suck your wallet dry.
You will be looking animals and birds with a diffrent appreciation than normal people have.
Sleepless nights will be spent designing new devious flys.
Stop while you have the chance!
But when that first fish hits that fly that was hand tyed by you. Well, you are going to be more excited than white on rice.
:o)
May you catch many many fish with you flies.
P.S.
May I suggest barbless hooks and a lock box. It will make the enviornment a little safer for the young one. Who no doubt will soon be tying with dad.

That's a good idea about the lock box. He's pretty good to understand that Dad's fishing things are SHARP! But there is harm in being a little extra careful.

Hey Graycliff, that's two times the flies if the little one is tying with you. I'd take advantage of that one just as soon as you can. Actually, do get in to tying as many patterns as you can at once -- you get into a rhythm. Congrats on the first buggers.

"Walks" of course is correct about the addiction and his P.S. is well thought.
Try to bulletproof your tying things (area) as much as possible from toddlers as "Inquiring minds want to know!" was a saying started by a parent.
A childs memory is quite short and maybe Mom or Dad just meant "no", 10 minutes ago and not now.
Think in terms of nailing your stuff to the ceiling and then burn the ladder.
And they do put everything in their mouths!!!

A few years ago I had just finished tying about 20 buggers. I left my stuff out and did something else for a few hours. I went back downstairs and found all the marabou tails cut off. A young neighbor boy thought it was fun to use the scissors on the bench and cut off the tails.

Did the hospital have much trouble getting your boot cleaned and returned to you? Does the young man still walk funny?
