View Full Version : $15 rod-blanks.com
I am hoping someone out there can save me some trial and error. I have both an 8' and 8'6" 3 pc 4 wt $15 balnk. I am looking for guide spacing on both of these. Preferably someone who has built these and has adjusted suggested spacing to get the optimum.

I went in to FT and used there Winston spacing chart. I then adjusted the guides a bit. Once this was done I then had a model for the rest of my 8'6 and 9ft 5wt's.
Also you can do a google search on spacing charts and find a lot of information.

I just ordered a 9' 5wt set from rodblank. How much did you change that guide spacing.
Also what do you think of the feel of the 5wt. I made a 7' 6" 4wt and have a 5wt line on it so that it would load better. (You looked at that rod the day we were all on the Middle.)
I'm hoping that these blanks are a "little" beefier cause it will probably be a pontoon boat rod.
Buy the way I think the 7-6 4wt is pretty sweet. Considering the cost.

Cary posted a sweet post last week I think about this. Not specifically about the $15 blanks, but about guide adjustments in general. I'm kind of llike Jaymorr on this one. I used the Sage guide placement at Fish Tech, and have just copied that from rod to rod.

I guess I should have been clearer in my original post. Basically I suck at wrapping guides. I have several suggested spacing charts that are all within 1/4 inch of each other. I was just hoping to eliminate wrapping, checking for line slap, then re-wrapping, by getting spacing from someone who had wrapped these blanks and then adjusted the suggested spacing.
Cheech did you adjust the sage spacing much or did they work out as suggested?

The Sage spacing works great. I'm sure that just about any spacing chart you get will be just fine.

Rod, there's no need to wrap, unwind, and re-wrap. Use masking tape for the test casting. Or, use a spacing chart. It all depends on what you're looking for. Admittedly, sometimes the advantages of going through the stress distribution test, test casting, ect, is miniscule. But sometimes, not.

Its all your preference or style. Cheech showed me the masking tape trick and that works good. I also use a ink pen and have a dot system that is working for me. But the charts, SAGE Winston, and others have all been good and I dont have to adjust much at all! I think you will be happy with the 5 weight! I am currently wrapping 2 9ft 7wt's. One is a three peice and the other two. If you would like to see some of these other blanks (not finished), let me know. I have another shipment that just came in and I have an assortment.

the rod will still cast line which ever guide spacing chart you use. So dont stress over getting into the static guide placement if you dont want to go through it yourself. Reason being every rod is different. Notice that on sages site the guide placement charts ask you for what rod model you are using. This is due to the fact the rods are different. They bend different. Guide chart for an XP is not going to be optimal for your 15 dollar blank. I would use sages' SLT or VPS as a starting point for that blank. maybe even the VPS light.
