I'm a new tyer and I have a recepie that calls for a furnace hackle tail. What color is that? Anyone? I can't seem to find any at the shops I've tried.

Furnace is basically a brown hackle with a black center stripe (the stem and the base of the fibers is black). it can be substituted for brown quite easily. What pattern are you tying?
It's the Sheep Creek Special from one of Marv Taylor's books. He calls for a tail of furnace hackle. Now I know. Thanks!

That is a great fly. I have many in my boxes. I just use brown and it works fine. I tie it with a brass bead, a red glass bead, and plain. Also try it with yellow dyed mallard for the wing.
