View Full Version : Thin wire

I have had a couple of tiers contact me from IF about thin wire for small flies.
Just a thought for some of you that might work in a place that has copiers- especially Cannons- the corona wire that is used for those is so thin that I have to put my tying glasses on to deal with it- though it is still pretty strong for the diameter- comes in gold plated and a darker tungsten.
Get to know your tech.

I can see the headlines now.

"Fly tier goes to jail for trashing company copier."

sweet small copper off a few control transformers and contactor coils that we have burned up. One contactor coil has more copper that you could use in 5 lifetimes.

If you don't have have access to that stuff... I have found that danvilles extra fine wire is fine enough to rib a #30 dry fly and not make it sink.

There isn't enough in a copier to tie 3 flys- but the techs spools are 50 meters. Just living by the theory " if it's free it's for me"

That a boy Norm, now you're starting to think like a fly tyer. Pretty soon you'll be eyeing all the foam, wire, rubber, plastics, etc, at work and sneaking out samples while no one is looking. Then you'll start looking at the neighbors cat as an asset, not a nuisance. Then one day you'll see a dead fox on side of the highway and decide to stop and check it out, scissors in hand. Instead of going duck/goose hunting for the thrill of it and a nice meal, you'll be hunting for feathers. There's no cure by the way.

No truer words have ever been spoken.

It's funny but Is tarted tying flies to save money, now my flytiying material is worth about the same amount of money as my car.

LOL! Well then, I guess I'm left to conclude that either your car is a POS, or you have one heck of a lot of fly tying stuff, OR BOTH???!!!

Which is it, Dave!?

how would you prepair cat or dog fur for dubbing. My Lab has a very fine fur on the neck area might be a good pmd match but do I need to run it thru a grinder or something?

Norm

P.S. I would also like to get rid of the neigbors cat. Do you just salt the pelt??

I also have a neighbor's cat I'd like to be rid of. Very, very, very much like to be rid of. Really nice and very long fur - great for woolly bugger tails and the like, I'd think. Send me an e-mail if you're interested, Norm, and I can give you the particulars.

I've seen Dave's car... No comment. j/k I would, however, like the stuff in the trunk... My car is in a worse boat than his. I think my $15 3wt. is worth more than me car. It will last a heck of a lot longer too.

Norm- I was at a friends house when he started brushing his Golden Retriever. It didn't take long for them to get me a baggie. I went home with some really good dubbing. It makes the best golden stonefly nymphs around. All you have to do is brush the hair out (preferably after a bath) and use it. No grinder needed.

LMAO!!!!! Oh man, let me wipe the tears from my eyes. I can besrely sea the kee board as i type. I haven't laughed that hard for a while. Thanks. My co-workers are wondering what the hell is going on.

Wooooeee. Ok. I'm not sure about the cat but as for your soon-to-be bald lab, just try cutting it up into 1/4 inch clumps with scissors and mixing it and working it together by hand creating a nice fine mixture. The underfur would probably work great for a nice smooth dry fly body or emerger. Go for it and let us know how it works. Maybe you could call it the death lab PMD emerger.

The "PMD Death Bitch Emerger" I'll bet lab fur has good floating properties. That bitch sure can retreive.

I think you've got a winner Norm. I'm sure Umpqua and Orvis will be lining up at your door to get you to sign with them. Maybe you could dye some in a light olive color (BWO) for the Green River trip. You could come with a whole death bitch emerger series. Keep us informed on how it's coming along.

Actually both. You got to love the Salt Grey paint job.

OK maybe its not worth as much as my car...Although the lack of cleaning is catching up.

You and Rod hog have seen me in action more than anybody!!!

Dennis to Dave..."I have an Asian Partridge"
Dave..."Asian Partridge. Wow!!! How much."
Dennis "20 bucks."
Dave "Throw it in."
Sumner "What are you gonna tie with that?"
Dave "Tie with it, Ill jsut store it and look at it every once in ahwile, and say wow that's neat."
Sumner "So your just like the rest of us."
Dave "absolutely!"

BTW I still haven't tied a single fly with the Asian Partridge yet.

So as you guys can see...The disease goes on.

Speaker wire should work well also. There are quite a few strands wound together, just get that crapy stuff you wire your speakers up with now, and then call me for the good stuff.

Cat hair really isn't worth a crap to the fly-tier unless it has been flattened significantly and smells of asphalt.

Funny thing happened a few Sunday's ago. While driving my wife and mother-in-law home from church services a rabid squirrel decided to take on my taurus. I won the bloody battle, much to the chagrin of my wife and mom-in-law who were both angry for my delight in shedding the innocent blood of God's creature. "It's the law of the jungle" I told them.

After dropping the ladies off at home I decided to go back and retrieve my trophy for squirrel zonkers and the like. I guess I didn't finish him off well enough cause I couldn't find the little fella, who when I saw him last was doing cartwheels down the road.

Next time I'll swerve toward him!

Dave...........You better start using it so I can sell you another when they get in. I've got about 10 of them coming in. Rod Hog has been after me to get them in. You know, you can't have something he hasn't got.
