For those of you who tie the Yong Special, do you actually use the Coats and Clark thread? If not what do you use?

Being a bit lazy today...Where can you buy the thread?

I have tried rod wrapping thread. It's nylon but it seems to tie up well. Haven't had a chance to fish the little buggers made with this thread. Most fabric stores carry the C&C thread. Lots of colors and two spool sizes. Will be experimenting with C&C thread on some little extended-body nymphs.
For those who fish the Provo, stay tuned. I'll be looking for some of you to try these nymphs right before the PMD hatch. It's so easy to get free flies! All you have to do is report your success or failures.

You can also get the thread at any Wallmart...

I've been using DMC thread for my Yong's which most craft stores carry. They're small packages of thread that run about $1.00 each in about 100 different colors. Each strand is made up for about 7-8 smaller strands that you can pull apart and use for smaller flies. Works great. Go to Mac's, Michaels, or any yarn/sewing store to get your thread.

I've been thinking of tying up some of the Yong flies and noticed that the recipes call for hooks of size 20 and smaller. My question is, are size 16 -18 as effective? I tend to fish #20 and smaller in the winter and move to 16-20 when the spring flows have stained the water a bit.

I have been using the C&C thread like described in the FF magazine. Using the same colors he suggests and the same hook size. The ones I ordered from him, however, look a little different. The thread looks different than what I have. The flies are tied really well and the wraps are real tight and even, which is also different from mine. The Yong flashers are like a size 28 I think. He sent a few others that I don't know what they're called, but they appear to be a size 30. From what I understand, the fish in the San Juan are more interested in the real small midge patterns of 28 and smaller. You can always try larger sizes on teh Provo and compare.
Incidentally, I have only used these patterns for the past few weeks. Only used one that he sent me and the rest that I tied on my own. My success rate has not been terribly good on them and different colored midge nymphs tied on a size 22 200R hook have worked much better. But, I'll keep trying them and see what they can bring up on the Green. I did order the Green River package after all.

I went to buy some C&C thread last night at Joannes. Do you guys use the topstitching thread or the all purpose thread. I didn't realize there were so many types of C&C threads.

fshfanatic,
What color(s) do you tie them in?

I have used C&C Thread before on some, IMO it really doesn't matter the Thread Type as long as you form a proper Fly Shape.
The Colors I have found to be most productive have been Tan, Yellow, Red, and Olive.
Size does matter, IMO, I wouldn't use anything larger than a 20.

The C&C thread was the Dual Duty thread, which I thing is polyester (Same stuff that fshfanatic has for a suit) and cotton blend.

But you have the knockoff Angels Flights. I have the real thing. Plus you wear you fishing vest under the jacket dude. That faded vest doesn't match your chartruse suit.
