Since a lot of us are trying to do a lot of tying during the winter months, I thought it would be cool to see how other tiers organize their fly tying desks/areas. So, I'm asking for all you tyers to send in a photo of your fly tying area. Just take a photo using a digital camera and crop it down to 700x500 pixels then email it to me. I'll put the photos together so everyone can check them out. My email is jason@utahonthefly.com

Great idea!
This is my first post here. I finally registered for the main purpose of this topic. I love to look at other fly tiers work areas. I have seen many and am always fascinated with the creativity that some areas exhibit.

I have tied flies for over 25 years with 20 of those years as a full-time commercial tier. After all those years, I just got burned out tying close to what seemed like every waking moment. In reality it was closer to 12-14 hour days. I have only tied a few dozen flies in the last few years, but keep abreast of new stuff and attend the various shows.

Now that I have I am a member here, I hope I can contribute to the forum.

I will take an image this morning and submit my station. Nothing fancy, but functional.

This should be interesting to see.

I will try to send a picture of how my materials will be set up within a week. I'm in the process of placing all my fly tying materials into my roll top desk. Once I get everything in there it should be rather organized and nice.

Imagine you found a desk at the dump, somewhere at the bottom of a pile of dead animal parts, and you have a good idea of my station.

If you want to be impressed, come to the Idaho Falls show & check out Stef's setup.

Pagosa, nice to have you aboard. Where are you from? If you go to your User CP at the top of this page you can add a lititle info about yourself on your Profile. Your comments describe exactly what I'm looking for. I too enjoy checking out other fly tying setups to get ideas and to see what I can incorporate into my own fly tying setup. I've heard LV2FISH has a dark dungeon in his basement with a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling where he ties his flies. I'd like to see that one.

Next Salt lake tying meeting is this Thursday night at 7:30pm at the Orvis Shop. Dennis Brakke will be giving a slide show presentation on fishing stillwaters in the Manitoba, Canada area. This should be one not to miss.

Thanks for all the submissions so far. I think I've received photos from 6 people. And yes, I do have photos of your 'desk' Ouzel. Thanks.

Is there anybody else that would like to submit a photo to me? I think I've got about 8 so far, not including mine.

Well, I could get a pic taken of me tying on my kitchen table with crap scattered everywhere, and my wife beating me over the head with a broom stick, but I don't think that is what you are looking for.

I can usually get away with having it on the table for a day or 2 and then I better clean it up, or I am a dead man.

That sounds about like my set up. I've avoided the beatings so far.
I actually have my materials separated out into clear plastic bags (the ones that sheets and bedspreads come in) they zip up and I can keep , feathers in one, dubbing in another etc...
I also use a tackle box for thread and such...

It's good to see that I am not alone.

I am actually excited to see the pics. I need some ideas on how to set my "desk" up.

I tie on a bar stool on a bar counter top. I've got it set up in the lower level of my home (i.e. I don't actually go to a bar). It sounds weird, but it's the only way I don't get back aches when I tie for a long time.

I've got to figure out a way to avoid or lessen the backaches a little. Maybe the solution is some magnification so I don't lean forward so much to scrutinize the fly...I'd be interested to know you experienced tie-flyers have alleviated any back pain issues.

I have a white artist canvas panel about 12" X 16" in back of my vise approximately 8 inches. When I tie the fly is in front of the panel, therefore providing a white canvas background to the fly. I move my light to reflect from the fly to the panel. It makes it easier than leaning forward squinting to a junky backdrop of fly tying tools. I cut a slot in my desk to fit the panel into when I tie. You can buy these canvas panels at any art supply or craft store. It saves on both the eyesight and the back. I also have my vise protruding out from my desk about 5 inches, so it is right in front of me.
