Are there any hardcore purists that have an insect aquarium for indigenous aquatic insects? I have tried to start one, but my bugs die-off too quickly. I'm probably doing something wrong with the water. I'd really appreciate some tips, because I would also like to photograph the insects' life-cycle for my own gee-whiz.

I don't have any personal experience with insect aquariums, but I do know that you really need to simulate a river as best as possible. This involves keeping the temperature similar to that of the insect life in the river you've borrowed bugs from, making sure that there's an adequate flow of water, providing the needed food source for the insects and simulating night and day. That's no small task! I imagine that there are probably some tricks of the trade that might make some of the above easier. If you're really interested, I would contact an entomologist at a university and see if you can't get some tips or advice.

Instead of an aquarium make a small rectangular box out of plexi-glass. Take it and a camera with you out on your favorite water put insects in the small aquarium and take pictures they turn out great and can be a great guide for tying flies

Seems to me that Angler's Inn in Sugar House used to have one in their shop. Maybe they still do. Perhaps they can give you advise.
