View Full Version : Fall streamer swap

cheech
08-14-2003, 04:46 PM
Since fall is all but upon us, we should gear up for fall fishing. I have never had much success fishing streamers in moving water, and I have vowed to improve my skills. How about a Fall streamer swap. I'm talking about the BIG weighted stuff that big browns chase. I'm thinking of having 12 entries, with a due date of 9/12 around there. I'll be tying a modified Cheechenstein.

I am tying my Ally Cat! (Name I came up with when I used left over materials to create this pattern.)

Fish love her.

Way to go man! For those of you who don't know bswens, he ties some great streamers!

Fishin' Junkie
08-14-2003, 09:23 PM
I've never participated in a swap, but I'd love to for streamies. Count me in if there's still room. I'll be tying the "big nasty", although a size 6 has proven to be the most productive size.

Trout4x
08-14-2003, 11:20 PM
Steelie you had better tie a couple extra for me.

icthys
08-15-2003, 12:11 AM
I can't miss this one, I'll tie up a Smiths Shad, makes a great wiper fly, hope that's OK with everyone.

Rockstar Caddis
08-15-2003, 03:02 AM
If there is room I would love this one. I will tie up one that I use on the provo. A version of a hot head/matuka/woolybugger/cone head.

I just counted and I guess I am out unless everyone will let me in.....Oh Please for the love of God let me in this one....out

I would love to, but the next month every free minute will be taken. Steelie can just tie some for me, great swap just a bad time I wish I could be in.

I am in if it isn't too late. I tie a peacock bugger pattern that is pretty effective.

bswens
08-20-2003, 04:50 AM
i am really stoked on this swap. it looks like we're going to have some killer streamers to fish with this fall. for me it has been hard to decide what pattern to tie up. i decided i want to go with my "go to" streamer, the mohair leech. it has been the best producing streamer for me on the provo starting this febuary and into late spring, which is when i started fishing that river. it has taken a number of nice browns from 18" to 22". they go buck wild for it. i have a ton of confidence in this fly. my only aprehension is it's simplicity. i don't want anyone to feel scammed by getting a fly that isnt much to look at. so i thought i would just pose the question: do you want this fly in its pure form, or would you like me to flash it up? if you like your streamers a little flashier, i will enhance the original and tie yours up Halo Leech style and put some fash in too. let me know your preference. bswens@hotmail.com

bswens
08-20-2003, 06:06 AM
tied a couple up the more flashy way and they look sweet. so i think i'll just do them all like that unless anyone objects.
thanks, bswens

icthys
08-20-2003, 04:01 PM
I've been in a few swaps, and my biggest complaint is that I think people tie up a pattern just to "show off". Ooooo, look at me I can tie the prettiest fly known to man. Personally I don't care if you are the best tier, I want what the fish like best. Also, I'm not a very good tier at all, the simpiler the pattern the more I like it.

Utah DaveII
08-20-2003, 05:02 PM
Ease up on Bswens just a little. I think he's just excited to be in a swap. I don't think he was bragging about being a great tyer anyway. There's nothing wrong with Halo leech style either. It will work just fine, it's been my nubmer one streamer in the early summer and spring.

Anyway from what I hear from his dad, Bswens can't tie a lick anyway, so that ought to be your worry. Just kidding Bswens(LOL)

icthys
08-20-2003, 05:09 PM
My intent wasn't even close to getting after him. He asked if those in the sawp wanted him to flah up his already killer pattern. I don't want him to flash it up if it already works great, but if it fishes the same with a little flash that's great too. My mind set is guys will add unnecesary stuff or pick a pattern they don't really use but looks sweet just to look good themselves.

Rod Hog
08-20-2003, 05:10 PM
Tie up icthys a San Juan worm in a size 4, with lead!

icthys
08-20-2003, 05:24 PM
That's what I'm talking about, simple and effective!!!

Utah DaveII
08-20-2003, 07:11 PM
Have to admit that was pretty funny.

Hey Maybe he could tie up the Helicopter San Juan Worm?

Rod Hog
08-20-2003, 07:15 PM
That is a pattened pattern. To tie that up for a fly swap, you would need to get permission from HSJ Worm.

cheech
08-25-2003, 04:48 PM
Unless y'all are going to teleport these flies to my desk, I need you to email me so I can give instructions. Here is the final list. Bswens, tie up whatever you want, MWS isn't in this one to tell you it's ugly.

Cheech- Cheechenstein
Steelie- Conehead muddler
Jason- ?
Trouty- ?
Rod Hog- Fly fur streamer
Fred- Platte river special
Grizz- Snow white stripper
JayMorr- Ally cat
Bswens- mohair leech
FishnJunkie- Big nasty
Icthys- Smith's shad
Clinton Goodman- Heinz 57 fly

cheech
08-25-2003, 08:02 PM
Oh yeah... I forgot the rules... I could follow T4X's lead and send a document that is >5 pages long and requires a notary present when you check your email. I think I will follow the easier route. Just send stuff so I can re-send the flies. Whether that is an envelope with postage, or just cash money, it's up to you.

cheech

Jason
08-28-2003, 06:39 AM
Something that Cheech forgot to mention, send your flies in a crush proof container with return postage. And for goodness sakes, don't send your flies in a regular envelope. Your welcome Cheech.

Jason
09-05-2003, 06:25 AM
Cheech, how about an update? I've got mine done. I decided to tie a Little Brown Trout. It's a sweet pattern.

cheech
09-05-2003, 04:33 PM
So far, I have NO flies. I trust that they will all magically appear at my house on or before 9-12. I'm about half way done with mine.

Utah DaveII
09-05-2003, 05:17 PM
Just urious is the back of your Brown trout Streamer Brown or an olive color?

Jason
09-05-2003, 06:56 PM
It's a brownish/yellow color. More brown I guess.

Utah DaveII
09-05-2003, 08:45 PM
Don't even start!

Rod Hog
09-05-2003, 08:51 PM
Utah Dave II has identified a rare strain of brown trout that is actually green. I think he has it down to the species level, Salmo Trutta Bullshitis. You may try putting green into your brown trout minnow imitations from now on. Utah Dave II has also found brown trout minnows to be very effective on luring in record size white fish. He was actually able to get Craig Matthews to totally revise his thinking on streamer fly pattern theory! Rock on Utah Dave II !

cheech
09-05-2003, 08:57 PM
Who knows, Maybe the little browns dress up for Halloween. Jason is colorblind anyway.

Utah DaveII
09-05-2003, 09:02 PM
A little bitter today?

we'll since we've finally brought this debate to the board.

Rod Hog and myself have been having this debate for some time now. I've been looking for the perfect little brown trout streamer. We'll I've been trying to tie a fly with an mottled olive back, white body, yellow side and red gills.

Rod Hog likes the Fly fur Streamer, The fly fur streamer has a rust back and white underbelly for the brown trout version. I say that's all fine and dandy, but most brown trout that I have caught tend to have a light olive back. Now true Brown trout streamers should be viewed from the side, not the top, but I think their is more olive in there than we think.

So the debate goes on! What do you guys think

Rod Hog
09-05-2003, 09:09 PM
As you may recall, the Fly Fur streamer for brown trout has a blonde body (with a hint of brown) and not a white body.

MWSpearo
09-08-2003, 08:56 PM
I had lunch with Cheech and Jason today and saw Jason's brown trout pattern. It looks pretty sweet. I think it would work a lot better than the "brown trout" cheech leaves in to bowl for my wife to find.

Nice tie Jason.

cheech
09-08-2003, 09:03 PM
That was sick and wrong. Nobody can ever catch that sneaky dookie monster.

Anyway, I only have 1 person's flies so far. I hope you will all have your patterns sent by 9-12. If not it might just boil down to a good ol' country ass whoopin'

steelie

They're in a box, and will mail tomorrow! I'm stoked to see everyone's patterns. Mine isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but it catches fish, and is basically bulletproof. I've never had one fall apart on me. The air is getting cooler, and the streamers must come out of summer hibernation soon! Tight lines!

icthys
09-09-2003, 11:07 PM

Mine are done, just need to get them in the mail, seeing you go T4X might be fun though, I think I'll wait!

Trout4x
09-09-2003, 11:49 PM
No hurry guys, he will wait a month past the deadline to ship your flies. LOL

I would have ventured but I know my streamers would look like "crap" and I didn't need anyone telling me that they did. LOL

Got some flies yesterday. They all look super nice so far. I will remind you that these flies are going to be judged by a professional panel, and a prize will be given. This professional panel likes shiny objects.... hint, hint.

Fred
09-11-2003, 10:10 PM
I sent mine today. So, you won't have to open up a can of whoop ass on me.

I also included something shiny for the Swap Goat.

cheech
09-11-2003, 10:47 PM
Hopefully it aint a beer can.

icthys
09-12-2003, 12:22 AM
I haven's sent mine out yet, sorry, I can't get a break during the day to take them. They will be in the mail tomorrow morning. Like T4X said, I'm sure they won't go out for another 3-4 weeks : )

steelie
09-12-2003, 05:47 AM
Like icthys, I didn't get mine in the mail today. They will be sent tomorrow. Cheech, I have enclosed a large wad of cash with mine, so don't judge anything until you get mine. :)

I didn't have enough turkey to tie up that many regular muddlers so I changed my fly. Tied up my version of the Kiwi Muddler. I also don't have my printer hooked up yet, and I ain't hand writing that many recipes. If anyone needs one, let me know and I'll email it to you.

cheech
09-12-2003, 04:16 PM
I always liked Kiwis better. Just send them in whenever. This judging process is very technical, so it might take an extra day or two.

icthys
09-15-2003, 02:18 PM
I didn't send in a recipe with my fly, I didn't think anyone would actually want to tie it up again!, but if you do let me know and I can post it here or email it.

cheech
09-15-2003, 04:32 PM
icthys- You can put it if you want to. I think we all should be able to figure it out. I like the pattern. I bet it would KILL for Bass.

Rod Hog
09-17-2003, 04:28 PM
Any idea when you will be sending out the flies? The browns are starting to move out of Hebgen, so now would be a great time to test others' favorite streamer patterns. Perhaps you need to consider opening up that can of whoop ass if you still don't have all the flies. By the way, I am sure that anyone who was past the deadline certainly would be disqualified from the "best fly" judging. Right?

Fred
09-17-2003, 04:44 PM
Rod Hog,

Are you headed up that way?

I might be also.

Rod Hog
09-17-2003, 05:32 PM
Had hoped to this weekend, but without the Cheechenstein streamer I doubt I'd catch fish. Will have to wait.

Fred
09-17-2003, 09:10 PM
Is the cheechenstein streamer really all that?

It sounds like maybe you need to pop open the can of whoop ass if it's going to cost you a trip.

How many of these slackers are we waiting on, anyway?

Rod Hog
09-17-2003, 10:20 PM
Don't know how many slackers are holding us up, Cheech hasn't responded to my post earlier today. Perhaps you are right - the can of whoop ass must be opened. Cheech are you there?

Man! I was so excited to see everyones streamers!!!

Well I guess my "Fibers by the Yard" order will be here before Cheech is back. I bought about $15 worth of Chennilles and fibers. Cant wait to tie up some new streamer creations!! With the money I spent I nearly have 40 yards worth of chennilles

I never got flies from Clinton Goodman, so I am sorting and sending right now. I have a few extra flies, I can send them back, unless of course you guys want to donate to the swap goat.
I had the flies judged, and the winner is... FRED! The judge was my 1 year old daughter. I spread them all out on the floor, and which ever fly she grabbed first, was the winner. Jaymoor was a close second. She didn't really pay attention to anything else. I will be sending out a SWEET prize for 1st place and a smaller prize for second. You will have your flies by the end of this week.

Stick to your small dries and nymphs as you don't really need the streamers until you get a better reel. A big streamer caught Brown Trout is just going to bust that System 1 apart. Your dad must really suck for not starting you out on a Ross!

JayMorr
10-17-2003, 03:43 PM
Ross Sucks! I am tired of the drag system falling apart and breaking down. Can they make there reels any louder?

Just a vent. I still have to pay shipping and handling when returing the reel every year!
