I tie a cripple BWO that is on a 2487 (scud hook). The problem with tying on this hook is that it is such a heavy wire that the fly sinks like a stone after awhile.
Does any one know of a hook of the same bend and shape, but in light wire? My "pattern fly" looks to be on such a hook but I have not been able to find it. Any ideas?? Thanks.

The 2487 scud hook is a light wire hook. I have gone to that exclusively for most of my parachute emergers and other patterns calling for a "scud" type hook. I don't think anyone to my knowledge makes a scud hook out of finer wire.
The 2457 is a heavy wire hook.
Have you looked at the 2488 and 2488H ? It is basically the same only with less bend and a straight eye.
Check them out at www.umpqua.com/hooks.htm .
Geesh, does Western Rivers realize they will probably lose half their customers out of half the ones who like them in the first place ? (just stirring the pot) :o)

You could always try out the TMC 921. It's a short stubby dry fly hook that has a slight scud hook shape, but the wire density is a little smaller than the 2487. I personally like the TMC 2312 which is caddis/stonefly dry fly hook for my emergers. I've really turned my hook buying habits toward Tiemco this past year and love them. The quality just seems better. Dai-Riki would be my second choice.
On a side note, I spoke with Steve Schmidt at Western Rivers the other day and he mentioned that he is going with Tiemco hooks exclusively and all barbless. I believe Tiemco offers all their hook styles barbless now, which is great. Now I don't have to press down the barbs on all my hooks, it's already done for me.

i wonder if they have changed the gauge of wire for the 2487. my stock, which was from 100 a couple of years ago, are decidedly not fine wire: they look like chunky chicken legs. maybe they have reduced them some.
jason, i want the sharp bend in the hook. i tie this with a tuft of hare's mask for the tail way down the bend of the hook, and then tie a parachute forced to angle up over the eye of the hook. a bit like a quiggly cripple but one i learned from a guy in west yellowstone. killer fly in size 18 BWO.
