O.k. so I just got a type 6 sinking line and I am trying to get prepared to go after some of the species that hold a little deeper. Lake Trout, Splake, Kokanee...

Does anyone have experience fishing for these with a fly?

I'm thinking that Causey is where I will chase them, unless someone has other suggestions.

Are there patterns and/or colors that are better for deep water fishing?

I don't have any experience at Causey. But, I have caught many Splake and Lake trout flyfishing. I have never had to fish in more than 10-12' of water. Just two weeks ago we were up on the Boulder Mtn fly fishing from shore. We were using grasshoppers, mainly fishing for the cutts, but the splake aren't too shy about shooting up from the bottom and smashing a grasshopper. I have caught lake trout fishing with streamers in the evenings in shallow water also. Fall is a good time to do it. We do a lot of fly fishing at Fish Lake in October. We usually don't start fishing until the sun is setting, and then fish for a couple hours after dark (or as long as the hands aren't numb). It's a good way to catch both Lake trout and Splake. It can be quite frustrating also. Just wait until you have a 10lb+ fish swim between your legs, but can't get the dang things to even look at your fly!

So, to make a long story short, I try to target the Lake trout and Splake when they are in shallower water, and more concentrated. When they get out in the deep water, they don't seem to be as active. They just sit there, and when it is time to eat, they just start floating toward the surface until they come up on an unsuspecting rainbow, then eat it and go back down....

Stout,

Give the kokanee another month and then try to locate them at Causey as they begin to stage to spawn. They will start to move shallower. Right now, during the day they are typically in 60+ feet of water (on a side note, if you want to jig for them, I can tell you where to go). In the spring and fall, you can find them cruising by the dam.

Drew,
I would like any info you can give me on Causey fishing.

I am pretty set on using this type 6 line and I guess I will just have to figure it out.

What about colors when fishing deep? It seems like I've heard something about what colors are best seen at depths...

Dennis might be able to expound on this more, but as far as fishing deep, black, blues, and purples show up better because they are the last colors on the color spectrum and there's more light reflection in deeper water. ...or something like that. I think it also has to do with how sunny it is and how high the sun is in the sky. Darks days=dark colored flies. Light days=light colored flies. ...and something inbetween. As far as personal experience goes, anything deeper than 25 feet black or purple have worked best.
