I've been reading this forum for a few months now and it has been a great source of information and entertainment. My compliments to Mike and Jason for putting together a great web site. Probably the best local source of fly fishing information. I figured that with this new format it was a good opportunity to register and start to participate.

I have been trying to plan a trip to take my Dad on next year. He is a big time upland game hunter and I love to fly fish. I have been looking at some resorts and float trips in Idaho and Wyoming where you can fish for trout or steelhead and hunt upland game. Has anyone been on a similar trip? Does anyone have any advice or suggestions of where to go? Let me know. It needs to be within 8 hours drive of Salt Lake.

I know that they do this type of trip on the middle fork of the salmon. However, I am not sure which outfitters do it. Good luck, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Middle Fork of the Salmon, eh. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, I'll see what I can find.

There is a ranch at Elk Mt WY that has several trophy trout ponds on the ranch as well as Elk, Antelope, Mt Lion, Mule Deer and small game on the Mt to hunt. The N Platte from the Snowy Range to the Miracle Mile and Grey Reef areas are all within 30 minutes to 1.5 hrs away. If interested I can track down the name of the ranch.

Try the North Platte a little further south(Colo to Wyo), as it goes through Northgate Canyon. Some untouched grouse hunting can be had, along with great fishing. Any of the outfitters in Saratoga, Ft. Collins or Walden can arrange the trip. However this year low flows prevented floats during hunting season.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is also an excellent option. Tons of chukars.

I hesitate giving this comment, but Road Creek Ranck has hunting and fishing (Loa, Utah). There is also Clear Creek Cap and Cast, Scott and Joan Foster, (307) 876-2332 in Whyoming. Both are "pay to play" sites.

Here is an excellent article that talks a bit about the Road Creek Ranch in Loa. http://www.sltrib.com/2000/jul/07302000/utah/7922.htm

I agree Powerbait...supporting the Road Creek Ranch is the same as supporting those in power of spreading whirling disease throughout the state of Utah--by all means don't go to the Road Creek Ranch!

That's a very interesting article. About 5 years ago when I first started flyfishing I went to the Road Creek Ranch as a part of a business trip. I was very unimpressed by the cavalier attitude about whirling disease that our guide demonstrated. I had already decided to not go back there because of this and because I don't really enjoy fishing in private stocked ponds like those. I had no idea how deep those problems ran however, and now I am even more resolute in my desire to not spend money there.

By the way, thanks for all of your suggestions. My Dad and I did decide on a trip. We will be taking a 5 day float trip down the lower Salmon in October and hunting chuckar on the way. The trip is with Natsoh Koos outfitters and sounds like the trip of a life time. I can't wait. If anyone wants to check out their trips check www.river-outfitters.com/fishing/cast-blast.html
