What is the best way to approach wiper fishing at willard? How deep do these fish usually hold? Are large minnow patterns like zonkers the only way to go? What is the best time of day for wipers? Thanks.

Hey, I went wiper fishing with my flyrod on Sat and caught 2 and one large smallmouth. I am hooked. I need to know any specifics about flyfishing for wipers if any of have any. Are cloudy days best, ect.? Please fill me in with any info you have. BTW I used long white Lefty deceivers and they seemed to like them.

from my own observations I found that the type of retrieve made a difference. I tried every retrieve I could think of, when i found the right one, it definately was the right one. My guess is anything white, and even tan will work, it did for me. I would try a depth of about 1-2' feet deep. I saw many schools of fish, I figured since I could see them they must not be deep, so I didn't fish deep. Fish a semicircle, from shore to shore. I'm no expert but this stuff sure worked for me.

I striped mine in using the same thing. I would stip 3 fast times of several inches and then let it sit for a few seconds and repeat that again. It did seem to work. How about you, did you use a certain number of stips and the rest method?

one long quick pull, then a 2-3 second pause. they usually hit it on the pause.

Email nightfish only if you receive a dozen of his cookies. LOL

Nightfish I hope you have the same success on this trip as you did on the HF trip.

Hi, I was going to mention that I used some #6 long white lefty's decievers to catch my wipers. I noticed that someone uses white zonkers are there anyother flies that seem to work?

I also caught a pretty fair smallmouth there. Has anyone caught smallmouth there with top water stuff at night?

Chris

Have any of you fished in the night for them or early in the morning with success?

do all you guys shell out 9 bucks and park at the boat ramp?? do you fish mostly along the dike? Is there a better or cheaper place to park? went out last night and got mobbed by the skeeters and I had no repellant. It wasn't pretty. Talked to a guy in a kickboat who fished along the northwest dike, he only caught 2 13 inch wipers. It sure was tempting to go after those carp with a floating line and a midge pupa. Thankfully, I went to Mantua and caught some nice bows, so the night was not a complete loss.

Don't go to the marina!

Take the road that heads west from Smith & Edwards, AND KEEP GOING! It turns into a dirt road, you'll have all the access you want.
