I am somewhat new to fly tying and am curious what you guys use to carry all your fly tying gear/material in when you travel or go to meetings. I was thinking of buying a big tackle box. What do you guy use?

I use a couple of the largest Plano tackle boxes. It has a four very deep draws that slide out of the front and the top has a rather large area to store hackles, and anything else I choose. Depending on what I'm going to need and be using I just fill one or two boxes up. I happen to have three of these large tackel boxes and they work great. If you would like to see them I can snap you a picture and shoot you an e-mail.

I put my individual packets of materials into large freezer size plastic zip loc bags--hair in one bag, dubbing in another, etc. and I bought a plastic storage container(66Qt.) with a lid at WalMart. I store my plastic bags of materials in there, and if I go on a trip, I put the container in my car.

I use a large tackle box just like the one that Fishn described. It would be nice, however, to have something that is designed to hold all my tying materials as well as my vise.

If you are going to flytying gatherings or traveling, minimize your materials. Unless you are going to tye flyes by the tens of dozens.
I use a three ring note book binder that has multiple zippered pockets. The main pockets hold my vise, threads. Small inside pockets hold tying tools, hooks, beads etc. I purchased a couple of plastic snap envelopes for hackles and such. multipocket plastic sheets for dubbing and small hair patch samples.
Just occasionally refill these items from your home storage container.
These items may be purchased at Office Max for a Jackson and Hamilton.
Resist temptation to overfill. Carry the specialty items as small samples.
Ouzel is the only Flytyer that I've seen at the tye gatherings who travels very lite. Just a palm size bag that holds his vise, tools, a few hooks and basic tying material. But then there is his warehouse at home.

easier.
I've traveled a bit and for some time and I've found that during the week or if I'm going to a fly tying session I'm going to tie one or two TYPES of flies and those maybe in two - four sizes.
My travel pouch is 7" X 9" X 2" and has two external pouches. The vise fits in the large pouch on a tangent the external pouches hold tools, threads and boxes of hooks. Also the large pouch will hold the tying materials I need for the flies I plan to tie (saddles, capes, fur, yarn, etc).
I don't care to lug around a big box with a lot of material that (I feel) is better left at home at my tying desk.

What do you use to store your materials in at home?

Thanks guys. Right now I keep all my stuff in 2 plastic grocery bags that I stuff full and stick in the closet. The main reason I ask is because for work the next 2 months I will be traveling. Home for a week, gone for a week. I figure I could try to get better at tying while I a sitting in the Hotel rooms at night. I thought this would also get me to organize my material.
I was at Home Depot Sat. and was looking at those plastic storage containers that you could hang or lean against a wall. They have a bunch of different size drawers from 2x2x4 to 6x4x4. The kind you put screws and nails in. I thought that would be good to store my stuff in at home, but not in a suit case.

Our now defunt Z-bag outlet, which I am totally depressed about it being gone, always supplied me with my traveling bags for everything- there outlet sales let me pick up bags that sold upward of $80.00 for $10.00 or less- one of the bags I picked up was a really nice traaveling camera bag- probabaly 18 inches long by 8 high and 7 wide. Codura , foam protected with a couple of velcro inserts that you can seperate with- front pocket and two end pockets- I put all fly meaterials in zip lock bags and it lets me carry just about anything I need. But as everyone has stated less is best.

I saw the large Plano box Fishn described at Costco for 20 bones. Last I checked, there was 20-30 left (murray store). I love the Plano boxes because they are so compartmentalized and allow for great organization of beads, dubbing, hooks, and room for hackels.
I also use a big tackle box. The one thing I wish I had looked for was a box that had a spot to attach my vise for "on the road" tying.
