View Full Version : Middle Provo
I decided to spend a leisurely afternoon on the river yesterday. I hadn't been there for a few years. I've fished the lower and done fine but took a beating in the middle. I screened and found some small leaches and loads of what looked like pretty good sized stone flies. Of course i didn't have anything too close to that. From what i could see, no one was doing much better. Anyone care to share a hint on what to try. I'm the stubborn type and will be there again, if not today then early next week. Thanks.
I appreciate the tip. I'm learning as I go and have a long way to go. Thanks a lot. I'm looking forward to trying again.

I fished the Middle this last Sunday, we caught all of our fish on san juan worms and hares ears, if you fish by charelston there are a lot of rainbows in the river right now.
I didn't make it back to the River on Friday but plan on this week. The guy i went with before was using a hare's ear and had no luck. We were up much higher, near Jordanelle. I guess some days you've got it and some you don't. I've tied up a couple of flies and am ready to give it a try again. I appreciate the reply. I am still learning and enjoying it to no end. I think that all i need is more practice;)

I find the closer you move to the Jordanelle wall, the smaller and spottier the catches become. Maybe I'm poxed with a curse, or I need to develop new strategies.

should feel too bad about having an off day on the Middle as for the last 3-4 yrs. (?) the state has done a lot of rehab to various sections of the river and that work of course has effected all sections of the river.
The habitate alteration has resulted in more miles of river and there was also a significant amount of river bottom work; all of which should start paying off for the fish and the fisherman.
But in the mean time everything was thrown up for grabs.
The plants will/have continue to reestabish themselves and the insects will/have continue to set up housekeeping.
The Middle used to be my favorite 'close to home' water and that was because until the state decided to 'improve it' it was fine stretch of water with good hatches and enjoyable fishing.
I not positive but I believe the last section of work (between Cottonwood Bridge and the Dam) was completed last fall.
No doubt it should return to a 'fine stretch of water'.
Thanks for all of the info and advice. I was able to get back to the same stretch of river at the end of the week. (Then had to leave town.) With some adjustments in gear and newly tied bugs, I was finally able to verify that there are fish. I appreciate the helpful hints and information. It paid off. It was a great morning.

especialy in the "new" sections has been real flakey in the past few years. Small, small fish, inconsistent hatches, and generally poor days. Thus i was VERY pleased last sunday to hit a hole in the new section below the river road bridge that gave me eight to ten 14 to 18 inch browns on a size 20 BWO dun: short time of rising fish: probably about 90 minutes total: but good takes, strong fish, and a happy fisher. So better times should be in store as this water rebounds.
