Are these big beauties out on any of the Norther Utah streams yet? I know it is about time, and I can hardly wait.

I was fishing a small stream in Southern Wyoming last week and was surprised to find several adult stoneflies crawling around. I put on a stonefly nymph pattern and caught a few, including a nice 13" brookie.

These guys are just gonna tease you Danny, the salmonfly hatch has actually come and gone up here, it usually starts in mid-april and lasts about a week, I've never seen it run into may. to be honest, all the good hatches are pretty much wrapped up in the north, nothing but nymph fishing for planted 'bows from here on out...........probably not worth the drive for anybody.......;-)

How can someone who is asking for hooks be telling someone else there are no free lunches??? LOL

I have been scouting the South Fork Of the Ogden River for the past week or so and I haven't seen them yet. I was told that they are active after Mother's Day, but nothing yet. Im not one to ask for help in this matter since im still a newbie to fly fishing.
What size fly should I use if I see these fly'n around? Nymph and Dry?
Size 4-8 for both. I tend to settle for 6 on the dries and 8 on the nymphs. Fish the nymphs now. I like to catch the hatch after a day or two. Seems some of our small fish need to get used to seeing the big things. They act scared of 'em the first couple of days. Bigger fish seem Okay with them right off the bat. Watch for birds fluttering around in the brush. They love to eat them to. I checked the river today. Nothing. I'm thinking sometime from now to the end of the month. Watch those CV boys. Last year they lied about the hatch and kept it for themselves.

We like to do that, for instance - the cub river has been so damn good lately, we had to devise a scheme to keep everyone away......
Jonny, use big flies - size 4-6-8-10 up to 2-3x long, all kinds of patterns work well, but just about anything you can put together at the vise will work too. Just make it orange/black, leggy, and over an inch long and it will catch fish. Stimulator/Sofa Pillow styles are a good place to start. Most of the day I will stick with dries, but its best to Nymph or at least tie on a dropper really early in the morning (start before sun-up), this is when I've caught most my big boys during the hatch. When the hatch is not on, the fancier nymphs work best, but during the hatch, I fish a "black rubber legs" - nothing but black chenille and rubber legs, heavily weighted. I use the same fly as a dropper, but with just a little bit of weight. Don't be affraid to slap the water with the dry either (and I'm not kidding about this), alot of times it will drive them crazy.
RAW, last year mother nature kept it for herself, 3 days into the hatch it got down to like 5 degrees on night, dead bugs everywhere the next day, easy pickings for the birds. I hope we get better cooperation this year.

you can fish a black, brown or gold stone fly nymph if they are natual to that water. They have a two & three year life cycle in the water before they hatch out so the trout are used to seeing them and trying to catch them.
Same for Salmon flies.
Too often we get so caught up in current hatches we forget that every day there are nymphs, fresh waters scrimps, sow bugs, et al drifting down the river.
I think there was an author who wrote a book with the title "What do you do when then is no Hatch?".

No Sammies on the Ogden last night that I saw. But the Golden Stone Nymphs were fun!
