View Full Version : What am I doing wrong? (hackle question)

I went fishing last night and didn't get any hits until I put on a #24 trailing shuck bwo.

Here's what I am doing, fix it where you can...

Lay thread,
tie on shuck,
tie on post and wrap a few turns up the post,
tie on feather/hackle,
take thread to end of hook and dub body, here I go to the eye then back to tie off hackle once it is wrapped,
wrap hackle clock wise and tie off, I tie off by wrapping thread around base of post then take it forward to eye and tie off.

Here's the crux of my question: why cant I get hackle tips to stick/point out evenly all the way around the damn thing? I will have many more tips/fibers up front than along the sides.

Anyway I hope that question makes sense.

Thanks in advance.

1. Poor quality hackle

2. Too few wraps(I use 4-5 wraps)

3. You're binding down some fibers when you tie off around the post or cutting them off when you cut off the excess hackle.

4. Be the master of your domain! If the hackle fibers aren't where you want them, then tweak, bend, pull, or scream at them until they get in line. I find when I pull out my razor blade, the fly tends to take notice.

Apparently, nothing.
