I have never been down there, but I have heard that there are some extremely big fish down there, which has me interested. I was just wondering if anyone out there has hit it since ice off, or even more recently if possible. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was there yesterday...still some ice on the lake which means no boats. Fishing is traditionally very good at ice-off--most of the big fish are caught at this time. For the big lakers and splake, try using minnow patterns at night. The big fish move in shallow this time of year to feed on yellow perch and suckers.

I go down to Fish Lake with family every year the end of June. I have never had any luck with flies on the lake. (buggers, streamers, leetch patterns) I have tried everything. If anyone would like to share some fly patterns and techniques they have found successful, I would really appreciate it! E-mail me if you dont want to post.
I usually end up going down on the Freemont river and having a great time fishing the small browns.
Thanks.

Caddis376,
I have had all my success on fish lake fishing late at night after dark on the east side of the lake. wading out a little ways so there is room to back cast and fishing dark colored streamers. The downside to this is you have to have a boat. and be willing to do it at night.
It hasn't happened to me yet but my uncle and cousin were fishing one night. They had the lantern on shore turned on so they had some light, and a big black bear came walking out of the trees and watched them for a bit before leaving. That would kinda freak me out. so beware of the bears also.

Thanks Crimedog. I will give that a try.
On the East side are you closer to Bowery Haven or Lake Side?

I have done well in the early spring time using a mohair leach (pond olive) with a bead. We usually fish the southeastern corner of the lake and work our way north on the east side. My wife and I have had good days catching 16 inch Rainbows and some small sized Splake. I usually use a sink tip III line and cast from the moss ring towards the shore lines. I use a slower retrieve while stripping the fly. I have also caught several perch using smaller nymphs along the weed beds.
Spring time on Fish Lake can be very good using leeches and buggers. I have tried fishing at night several times but I have never done well. I have always fished it during the Memorial Day on my way back from the Boulders. Good luck!!

Almost all of my success fly fishing at Fish Lake has come on white zonkers, egg-sucking leeches, and big bright colored streamers. I use these patterns in shallow water with a floating line during the night...but, if I were interested in chasing rainbows at Fish Lake (which I am not), I would definitely try small buggers right outside the weed beds in a float tube and with a sinking line.
