I'm trying to plan a good float/fishing trip around Idaho Falls this Memorial Day that I can take my pontoon boat. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I'm thinking about maybe fishing Box Canyon or maybe the Southfork.

Twee- if you are looking towards the box- don't forget Henrys opens also then- lake is at 85% of full right now. Though I usually wait just a bit on Henries- it can be good on the opener. Also - though the fish are usually not too big- that flaot from Big Springs down to Macs Inn is a beautiful float- slow- but great scenery. Also a few Mountain lakes just over the border from Henrys that can be good at that time.

If my dog didn't have pups right now, I would be hitting the Box and Madison for sure that weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indy- had a sales rep buddy hit the Madison last week- 24" bow on a prince- then took a tumble off a bank that gave way and trashed himself up pretty good. Small price to pay for a good bow though.

If you end up in Island Park, let me know. I will be there that weekend and am trying to decide the same thing - float the Box, fish at Henry's, float from Big Springs to Macks or maybe hit below Mesa Falls, Sheep Falls or CoffeePot rapids. I've always wanted to take the pontoon down from below Mesa Falls to the Warm River but would like to go with someone who knows that section first. Too much good water up there. Strike that - never too much good water, just not enough time to fish the many options up there.
If I don't take my family, you're always welcome to stay at the cabin though I know you have your own in that general area.
Let me know if you are going for sure and we can try to meet up somewhere.

I'm working on finalizing plans real soon. It looks like I'll probably plan on floating the Box Canyon on Memorial Day. If you are going to be in that area we ought to hook up, float it together and then we can help each other shuttle so we don't need more than one vehicle.
I'll e-mail you when my plans are finalized. We will actually be staying in Idaho Falls or Rexburg, thanks for the offer though. Where is your cabin at? We used to have one on Bills Island, used to catch a lot of big fish on the reservoir there years ago before they poisoned it, haven't fished it for a long time.

The cabin is at the top of Box Canyon, about a half mile from where the Buffalo joins the Snake. You're still welcome to come up Sunday night (again if I can talk my family into staying down south!) to get an early start on Monday morning though on opening weekend I usually have better luck later in the day in the Box. Probably my poor fishing. The shuttle idea would be great. Could float the river several times that way
Last year the fishing in the reservoir was supposed to have been MUCH better than Henry's. It has really rebounded quickly and they pulled some big fish out of it. I haven't fished the reservoir for years so don't have a clue where to go anymore.
There may be a few others who would be interested in the Box float/shuttle thing.
I wouldn't discount Henry's Lake on opening weekend though. Last year my parent's neighbor was up there and he showed me a large cooler full of 5-7 lb. fish he pulled out over the weekend. Wish he wouldn't have kept them all but they were certainly large and beautiful fish.
2 years ago on the in thte Box opening morning we quit counting at 75 boats. It was a joke!
Funny thing was we came back on Sunday and again on Monday and saw maybe 10 all day. From my limited experiences the BOX is always packed opening morning for obvious reasons.
