You guys that are interested in this type of fly have got to see the fly that Dennis brought back form the tying expo in idaho falls. It is tied out of a whole bright orange CDC feather. The stem is stripped and the top is left on. The stem is colored black with a marker, and them the bottom of the stem is tied onto a small midge. It looks much easier than this method.

I would think a parachute gallows would be easier than trying to rig up two vises. You can pick up a gallows for $15 or $16.

Dennis' fly was interesting but I would question it's floating characteristics in anything but calm water... stillwater fishing.
James' fly, on the other hand, looks like you could use it anywhere you could use a parachute pattern.
Both patterns look like they would produce.

If you buy a gallows tool which I would suggest here is the one I would highly recommend in purchasing from your local or favorite shop or order off the internet.
Makes tying a breeze.

I use my bobbin rest on my Traveler as a gallows tool. I rotate the fly so the top of the fly is pointing away from me, then I swing my bobbin rest over and attach a rubber band to it, and I use a large staple with one end bent closed around the rubber band and the other open to form the hook for catching the loop of thread coming out of the top of the fly.

I used my electricians soldering clamp as my second "vise". I clamped it down to the table and used it to hold one end of the extended body post.
This was a fairly easy one to tie and they are fun to create.
I used the instructions on hipwader which seem to be pretty good.
Now to get out and try these on some water around here.
