I am working on some chain-stitching patterns and the recipe calls for Ultra Thread. Ultra thread is slightly larger in diameter than 3/0.
Anyone know of a place in the Valley that carries Ultra Thread? Do you have a recommendation for a good substitute?

What are the patterns you are trying to use it for? On the Chain Stitch Mayfly I use 6/0 thread and it works like a charm?

is a couple, one is the damsel fly pattern. The book I looked at is Robert Williamson's, "Creative Flies".
The BWO is the other pattern I am working on.

Fish Tech carries Ultra thread in the 140 size. Otherwise, 3/0 Danville would work, as would 6/0 Uni.
Have fun.........

You can use any of the flat waxed nylon threads. I specify Ultra because it isn't as waxed up as some of the other brands which makes a split tail easier. Ultra is available through some mail order shops as well. Keep at it, it isn't as hard as it first looks.

not sure if you are aware or not but RAW = Robert Williamson, he wrote the book on chain-stitching, literally. Stick with it on the BWOs, he gave me some to try out and they worked marvelously!
BTW, RAW: I fished them again last sunday, but forgot to give you a report, I will type one up soon.

Set up a time with RAW and he will fix dinner (fresh trout) on the streamside and show you the tricks of the trade.

I picked up some DMC floss just for fun. It is a 6 strand thread which is what the pattern calls form.
I created a body last night and tied up a quick pattern. Seems like the only issue is how to keep the body/tail extended up. I put some wraps underneath to help it stick up which helped a bit.
Anyone have any ideas?

When Raw showed me how to tie the Chain Stitch Mayfly he said to use 5 to 6 strands of thread (different colors) depending on the color you are trying to match for example 2 blacks, 2 yellows 1 olive & 1 gray. Perform the chain stitch method to create your body. then leave a tag end for your tail and clip out all but 2 strands of thread to create your forked tail. Use head cement to keep the strands forked.
If you get a nice tight chain stitch the tail should not be a problem.
I hope this helps you out.
